Another forest fire started last night in the CBN region, their third of the year, which grew quite a bit overnight, leading to evacuations of several towns out that way.

Meanwhile another fire popped up this afternoon just outside Holyrood, which is a part of the St. John's CMA, which has caused a partial evacuation of the town. Smoke from that fire is currently over St. John's, and an air quality advisory has been issued.

Neither fire has been helped by the dry conditions; forest fire risk across the entire province is between "HIGH" and "EXTREME" right now, and today's heat and extremely low humidity, along with persistent wind, is the worst case scenario for fires.

There will be a slight break in the heat tomorrow, as winds shift northeasterly and temperatures drop to the mid-teens. This should give crews a chance to put dents in these fires. However, it will be extremely short lived, as the long-range forecast is predicting the hottest temperatures of the summer, along with gusty winds and very low humidity to set in Wednesday through mid-next week. If these fires aren't extinguished by Wednesday AM then conditions will not be favourable for fighting them for quite a long time.

24C with a humidex of 27 and hazy. There might have been cloud cover earlier in the afternoon so it wouldn't have been a fully sunny day but bad air quality once again and another day where that takes 2-3 degrees off our temperature.
Sickening. And then people complain about humidity?

Low of 17C this morning.

The warmspot was Kamloops, BC at 32.8C.

Warmest low was Western Island, ON at 20.2C

The fires in Conception Bay North and Holyrood are still growing, with more evacuations overnight. The winds should shift the fires back the way they came later today.

Our office in Seal Cove (part of Conception Bay South) is pre-emptively closed.

Humid weather has returned, looks like very consistent temps the next couple weeks.

21C and sunny in Moncton at noontime, going up to 24C this afternoon.

The seven day forecast shows extremely stable weather with daytime highs in the 28-29C range and wall-to-wall sunshine. Not a single drop of rainfall in the forecast.

Fire hazard in the province is now extreme.

Currently sunny and 23 at just after 1:30pm. Likely near the highs of the day, winds are expected to turn northeasterly this afternoon which will drop temperatures down around 15.

Holyrood/CBS fire hasn't grown much since it started late yesterday afternoon, so hopefully the cooler temperatures and wind-reversal will really help crews get it under control. Winds won't be super strong tomorrow either so that may help, though it is expected to be hot tomorrow, with temps increasing in the subsequent days.

CBN fire is completely out of control, tripling in size overnight. Even todays wind reversal won't help much there.

Not that close, and Conception Bay is between us.

So the pic SHH posted is just a rose mallow rather than true hibiscus?

I've got a couple Rose of Sharon plants and they're great, I just wish someone could breed one that keeps its flowers longer.

Rose mallow is a type of hibiscus, I think. Might be just marketing:

Hot and sunny. Perfect conditions for a lazy river float.

When you're done, walk back and do it all over again.

25C (humidex of 26) and sunny. There was an improvement today. The sun was actually noticeable and not hidden behind the smokey sky. Still not perfect air quality but compared to the previous 2 days, it's decent.

Low of 14C this morning. Looking forward to the more humid heat coming up.

The warmspot was Kamloops, BC at 32.6C.

Warmest low was Toronto (City Centre), ON at 21.1C.

My daughter shivers in the shallow lake in the middle of the summer. I took her for swimming lessons at Goldfish Swim School because it says the water is 90 degrees. She shivered there too. Good thing the first lesson is a trial. I dipped my hand in there and I have no idea how water temp is measured because it was colder than what you think 90 should be, but it wasn't as cold as regular pool. The city pools are 84 degrees.

Google Lens tells me this a Green Heron.

Blue herons are a dime a dozen. Beautiful bird and majestic flight. Awful sound though. Green herons are much less frequent sight. I've seen maybe three or four. This one was from when I was fishing in Caledon 15 years ago. It itself was fishing. It was looking down at minnows. I remember David Attenborough narrating about a bird dropping things in the water to lure minnows up and then plucking them out of the water. So I threw little pieces of my sandwich to this bird and sure enough he used the crumbs as bait and was plucking out the minnows.

The Holyrood fire has been held back, but the CBN one is still out of control, and the largest new one is in the Grand Falls-Windsor region.

Sunny, with some haze/smoke and 18 at 9:30am. Highs near 25 expected today, but with low winds I'd imagine St. John's will probably be in the low 20s while inland areas are warmer.

The 7-day forecast from EC is unlike anything I've ever seen before. Straight wall-to-wall sun, and temperatures between 25 and 28. I believe this is what the mainlanders call "summer". Unfortunately it's come at the worst possible time.
