We got an Ohio Buckeye tree.
New ones are more resistant but they generally don’t die from it until they are older. So hopefully once it’s old (I will be long gone) Dutch elm will be less of an issue.

It should be a well advertised one step process. I’m sure many homeowners would gladly shell out a few hundred dollars to plant a tree in front of their house instead of waiting for their tree to die and have it replaced. By the time my tree is dead it will have a grown in replacement.
I know you're all about the Twitter, but this is the stuff of a good blog post.

^ it’s true. If more people knew, more would do it. It should be a well advertised simple process.

I bought a ten foot tree just because I could. They happened to have a couple extra American Elms from a commercial job so I took them. But most homeowners would at least buy a small one, especially if it’s a proactive replacement and you have time.

Mine took a couple years to catch, which is apparently common if you plant a bigger one but it’s growing well now. Adds a few feet per year. I planted it during Covid and it’s probably 20’ high now.

That sounds way simpler and easier than the city makes it out to be.

The process (as it's described on the city site) is that you hire an arborist from their list of 18 pre-qualified contractors, and then you submit the form for approval (10 day turnaround), and one part of the agreement is that the professional arborist needs to not only specify the approved species and size, but also attach a two-season (May-end of Oct) maintenance plan with weekly watering by the *contractor*.

I imagine the zoning department will issue some sort of notice to Sunrex asking them to stop using the property for an unpermitted use or else risk being fined. At that point in time, Sunrex will probably try to rezone the property to C2, which would allow it to be used as a parking lot. Rezoning properties always goes to a vote with the Standing Policy Committee on Property and Development. Sherri Rollins is the head of that Committee and also the City Councilor for Osborne Village. In the past, she has expressed strong resistance to rezoning residential properties to commercial in Osborne Village (for good reason). So essentially I'm guessing that Sunrex will try to rezone the property and SPC Property and Development will deny that rezoning. Not sure what Sunrex would do with the lot after that. Hopefully sell it to a developer who would like to build some actual housing.
Just as a follow up to this, SunRex has taken down their signage and rebar for their illegal parking lot, but it's still very much being used for parking.

Does anyone know if this lot has been sold to a developer or anything? It's been a few years now.

159 Scott St has had the foundation wall poured:

The burnt house behind has been approved for a 4-plex and will probably be demolished soon.

Looks like there's a tenant for the main floor space in Zu (160 Osborne). Permits Online says 'Zu restaurant', no other details.

It's a big space - interested to see what's going in.
