not sure if this has been noted but Dastardly Villan Ale Works will be opening a brew pub and tap room where the Grape and Grain was on South Osborne. 8-9 months away apparently....they had a tasting kiosk set up a few days ago....South Osborne is becoming a great node.

Driving Osborne the other day, it does seem like South Osborne has a more impressive street presence than Osborne Village.

Lots of new boulevard trees being planted around the neighbourhood. Here is one of them on Scott St:

This handsome fella showed up on my street this week. Only 6 years after I wrote to 311 asking for them to consider replacing the lost tree!

the city did an absolute new tree blitz through osborne, earl grey and river heights over the last couple weeks....filled in almost every hole....most often with actual shade trees....i am obsessed with checking the tags...only the occasional lilac.....the last few years they have planed too many ornamentals.

You need to be a squeaky wheel with the tree replacements. We had our replacement up within a month or two after losing our big elm 5ish years ago. You also get to pick the tree species you want (based on what's available).

It's honestly been incredible to see, they really should be congratulated. And if the tags are missing, you can use a plant ID app like PictureThis.

I also noticed a significant amount of trees planted in my neighborhood this year that I was not expecting, and was done in a very timely manner. Upon further digging into the city's budget book, it seems the city added 8 forestry staff and a couple million dollars this years urban forestry budget for it's "comprehensive urban forest strategy" to speed planting along.

I really like it when the public can come together (i.e., 5.95% property tax increase this year) and fund things that have a tangible and visible positive outcome (like planting trees) as opposed to tossing more tax dollars into the ether only for it to never be seen again.

A few years ago I just went to the greenhouse and bought two American Elms and planted them myself before my boulevard trees die. Worth a few hundred dollars. Now they are 20 feet tall and will be ready by the time the old ones are lost.

Hilariously, doing this is against city bylaws.

Quote:
"Can a property owner prune, remove, or plant a tree themselves?
"No, the pruning, removal, and planting of trees is relatively high risk work that must be completed by qualified and insured experts (see the Agreement for Contractors to Perform Arboricultural Services on Trees Under the Control of the Urban Forestry Branch). Risks from improperly completed work include damage to property and injury to members of the public. Therefore, this type of work is not allowed except by a professional who has qualified with us.
If you want to plant a tree on the boulevard, you have to choose from a prescreened list of contractors, prepare a proposal for the city to review and approve, and then you have to pay them to plant the trees and then water and maintain them for *two* years!

I planted a bur oak and a hackberry where the gaps were in front of my house on the blvd, after the city told me they would get back to me within 3 years. After 3 years they are already 12 feet tall from being bucket-size saplings back then that cost me $25 each. I water and tend them myself. 3 more years and they’ll be 20 feet or more I imagine at this speed.

Should have been an arborist instead of a sparky

I had a commercial tree company in last fall to trim back a tree in my back yard and for what they charged somebody is getting paid well.

And they were the lowest cost of the 3 quotes I had.

Nope. Was all by the book. You do have to have a company do it. I paid the greenhouse $50. Was easy. You need to check with hydro and send that to the city. Took half an hour.

It should be a well advertised one step process. I’m sure many homeowners would gladly shell out a few hundred dollars to plant a tree in front of their house instead of waiting for their tree to die and have it replaced. By the time my tree is dead it will have a grown in replacement.

Hackberry's are beauties. I wish half the trees they plant were those. It’s the best American elm replacement. Not quite the same crown but close. Grow fast too.
