Calling the west side good looking is a stretch. It's a lot of blank wall with a few windows--nothing architecturally interesting at all. I also think the direct southern view isn't great because the proportions feel off. the top section is too skinny compared with the base. I do think the views from the east and southeast are good though. Yay, two good angles on our new tallest.

Hey guys, I was looking thru this thread from about 4 years ago (in 2021) AND we were all excited about all the new projects that were proposed such as the Main Street Apartments, the Sorenson project at West Temple and 4th south, the Sundial the 2nd phase of the West Quarter which unfortunately never came to fruition. Does anybody know what ever happened to all these projects??

I am especially concerned about the 2nd phase of the West Quarter. Has construction began on that yet? and if not when? Anyone know the status of this project (and the others). The 2nd phase of the West Quarter was supposed to have been FINISHED in 2024.

Inflation and high interest rates delayed a lot of those projects. I think West Quarter Phase 2 will still happen. I don't think Sundial, Sorensen, or the Main Street tower will happen, at least not in their most recent proposed forms.

Deseret News had an article on Astra Tower today with the following, for what it's worth:

At that, “this won’t be the tallest building for long,” says Shane Rensmon of Kensington Investment Co., the firm that developed the Astra Tower. “I just heard the other day about plans for people putting up buildings in Salt Lake that are 550, 580 feet.”

Agreed. It probably is, but would be cool.
I think the SEG renderings are probably a close image of what high rise massing will actually happen on that site.
What's most intriguing is what will happen on the West Quarter 2 site. If it comes out anything like the last renderings, That would be cool.
Agreed that those other towers mentioned are probably not happening, except, I think the main street tower will eventually be built. Remember how long it took for 222 so. Main to get started after the initial renderings, hype, etc ?

We’ve been hearing that for nearly 50 years. I’ll maybe get hyped when steel begins to rise. If history and our current national economy are any indication of what to expect.. SEG will give us a hand full of stubs. Hopefully they are nice looking stubs. Hopefully my predictions are wrong, and we’ll finally get that stunner which transforms the skyline from dud to stud.

Hanging out in Honolulu for a week. They have an impressive amount of towers in the 300-450 ft range. Like SLC they don’t have a true skyscraper. If they added a few 600+ the skyline would really pop. Cool place to be for a tower nerds like myself

Also very interested in SEG renderings whenever those become available

Not the best photo skills on a phone in a bouncy plane but did get one of the skyline flying into SLC recently.

Watched maybe one of the worst Death Wish rip-offs ever called Shadow of Vengeance. It ... kinda takes place in Salt Lake? I don't know. Like, there's a point where he gets a letter from the Utah Prison announcing the release of the man who killed his mother 30 years earlier and his address is listed as West Jordan ... and the movie is clearly filmed in Salt Lake. But then it talks about downtown being called the Hollingsworth neighborhood and then at the end you hear the city is in Hollingsworth County? So, I don't know. It's just awful.

But at the end, it pans out and above the city as a really awful newscaster talks about how they want this vigilantly to continue cleaning the streets ... but the skyline shot of Salt Lake is obviously superimposed into the video because this is literally out by Herriman High lmao:

When something is filmed here, Salt Lake is usually standing in for another city and the filmmakers attempt to mask that it’s actually SLC. When a script takes place in Utah, it’s because the church is tied into the story somehow and the events could only happen here… so it’s interesting to see a “gritty” action film not shying away from the Utah backdrop.

Getting back to development news, has anyone on this thread heard when the first phase of the seg development is slated to begin, Im surprised it hasent already began!!!

It most likely won't begin until sometime in 2027, at least that is the last I heard.

There is currently architecture work happening for the Salt Palace reconfiguration and redesign. There is a plan for some space to be included in Block D of the West Quarter. I would expect this to be meeting space rather than exhibit space but I don't know if it has been finalized yet.
