That central part is from 1843. It is from the early Victorian period, but architecturally it is similar to Georgian era buildings. It is sort of like an early architectural bridge between those periods, with one toe in the Victorian era.

This type of style seems to have been common around the St. Lawrence area from circa 1830-1870. It is also in Kingston.

View of the central part of downtown Halifax in the 1930's. The town clock on Citadel Hill is aligned with George St, the middle of the original planned town. You can see the Grand Parade aligned on that axis with City Hall and St. Paul's. You still see a lot of 3 storey semi-residential buildings, some with dormers, some without, that in many cases probably dated from around 1780-1840; most of those are gone now but some still survive.

I'm not sure what the original source is for this one:

St. John, NB (1904)

A portion of St. John's skyline in 1904 (before the spelling change to Saint John)

From the NB Museum archives.

Would sure be nice if the museum could re-scan this photo and others in much higher quality...

A few from Facebook. The first is an 1879 drawing of the city, and the rest are photos taken the next year in 1880. I wish we'd maintained the same sudden drop-off from rowhouses to farms. Managed to make it to the 1940s that way, at least.

South End Halifax, 1961. Before any modern highrises were built. You can also see the sugar and oil refineries in Dartmouth, and there's still a coal plant on the Halifax side. Dalhousie is all quaint classical buildings (one male residence and one female residence, at opposite corners of the campus); no concrete bunkers have arrived yet. This whole scene changed tremendously by the 1970's.

Great finds of St. John's. I too love how the small but busy core very quickly gives way to the countryside - it's the best of both worlds. Looks very British as well; I could imagine it as the setting of a Beatrix Potter book or something.

Cool Halifax shot as well.

Some shots of the Hindenburg over Saint John, NB in 1936 and 1937

Sighted in the sky of the West Side, in what was then, "Lancaster, NB". May 5th, 1937, supposedly one day before the Hindenburg disaster.

Here's some other shots of the Hindenburg from a previous, much more photographed journey that went directly above Uptown Saint John, NB (Then St. John, NB) in 1936:

Credit for the 5 pictures above to former forumer Ronald Jack and his excellent blog The Lost Valley - An Internet History of Saint John, N.B.

May he find his way back to the forum!

Along with two more shots of the Hindenburg above Saint John in 1936:

One from the Telegraph-Journal newspaper:

and, finally, what is probably the most widely shared photo of this rare air transit, above the old General Hospital:

a rather blurry photo of the Hindenburg above the old Saint John General Hospital — photographer unknown.

Cool and kind of creepy shots!

That would be like a MAGA blimp flying over next year with Olympic rings on it.

The one that's supposedly from the day before the Hindenburg disaster is especially eerie. 😱

And well, the USA and (sort of we) are getting the World Cup next year... and LA the 2028 Olympics.

I love me a good, Goodyear Blimp sighting... so maybe we will see it go on some sort of tri-national journey including Toronto, New York, Mexico City, and others?

If Trump sent a MAGA blimp to Canada with a Trump Airlines livery it would definitely cause a stir, lol.
