I'm so tired of this construction. Why would a contractor be allowed to take apart the entire stretch of both sides of the highway for months and years on end?

Holes were cut into the sound walls around Parkdale eastbound like a year ago, and then nothing, crickets, for months and months. All while the lanes at Parkdale are closed, on ramps shortened, and traffic backed up.

You'll say "Oh, it's so the lane closures are stabilized in advance, and not moved too much, so drivers become accustomed to the change" but then in the last three weeks the traffic pattern has changed at least three times...

Edit: Richmond Road, Pinecrest Road, Bridge Rehabilitation scheduled 2026-2027 also.

The lane closures on the 417 have been so annoying. It feels like some have been closed a year, aren't close to being open and it has become a chocking point for traffic at ALL TIMES, EVERY DAY.

Feels like it has become the norm lately, and not just with 417. Contractors fencing off the site, doing some work and then disappearing for months. I guess it gives them more flexibility stretching the resources over multiple projects without any penalties, while blaming labour shortage/supply chain crisis/tariffs, you name it.

I first moved to Ottawa in 1989 (before relocating to PHX in 2019).

I joined this forum somewhere around 2012, specifically for this thread, when I was working in Kanata and was "fascinated" by the 417 expansion through Kanata at the time (hence my handle

)

I can honestly say, in my 36 years of living in and visiting Ottawa, I have NEVER been able to drive end-to-end on the 417 without encountering some sort of construction at some point somewhere. No joking.. the Queensway has been PERMANENTLY and disruptively under construction for the past 36 years.

Sounds like the 401 through Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge. Construction for 25 years.

For me, I live and work on opposite ends of the City (and not necessarily on the LRT), so I have to choose between a 34-45min drive or a 1h20-1h40 transit ride. With free parking at work too, the decision is easy.

Highway 417 lanes, ramps to close this weekend for construction

Several lanes and ramps on Highway 417 will be closed this weekend as construction continues to replace the Preston, Rochester and Booth Sreet bridges.

The closures begin Friday night and are expected to continue until approximately 5 a.m. on Monday.

The left lane of Highway 417 eastbound from the O-Train to Bronson Avenue will be closed the entire weekend. The centre lane in that stretch will be also closed nightly.

The right lane of Highway 417 westbound will be closed from O'Connor to Bronson.

The eastbound Parkdale on-ramp, eastbound Rochester off-ramp, and westbound Bronson off-ramps will also be closed.

In a press release from Kiewit Dufferin Midtown Partnership, the company contracted to replace the bridges and noise barriers along the highway, the company said the closures will allow the transport of concrete slabs, as well as excavation, asphalt paving, line painting and drainage improvements.

It's from where the 417 crosses over the Trillium line - going eastbound it's just before the 417 reaches the Rochester street exit.

Wish I would've seen that BEFORE heading out on Saturday morning. Traffic was an absolute disaster, both sides of the 417 merging down to 1 lane each! Took 45 mins going EB from Carling to Kent.

Anybody have details on when the 417 construction is supposed to be completed? These lane closures downtown are a huge pain and have been ongoing now for months. I'm sure the multiple on-ramps and off-ramps all over the place don't help either - all the while other important roads like the Parkway are also closed, leaving us with little to no options.

Yeah, it's really quite bad. They can replace overpasses in a weekend, but whatever the heck they are doing here is somehow taking what, six months so far?

They're making this announcement, but it seems to me to be just a winter shutdown. They're not anywhere close to finishing the noise barricades, it's all piecemeal patchwork still...

and don't get me started on the quality of the paving in the fast lanes through the section. With the scale of the whoopsie-daisies through there, people are guaranteed to spin out all winter.

Will they be eventually replacing the median and the plumbing from the O-train line to Carling to link it all together?

Another months-long lane closure on Highway 417 in central Ottawa starts Monday, part of an ongoing project to replace overpasses that has sometimes frustrated motorists in previous summers.

Ontario's Ministry of Transportation (MTO) and contractors Kiewit-Dufferin Midtown Partnership began replacing five aging Queensway overpasses in 2021. The project also includes improvements to the highway's walls and ramps at Bronson Avenue.

The work was expected to end last year, but ramps at Lyon Street and Bronson have remained closed.

Earlier this month, the partnership announced it will once again need to close a lane while contractors complete work on a noise barrier, as well as electrical and drainage work.

Starting April 13, the right-hand eastbound lane will be closed from Carling Avenue to Rochester Street and the speed limit along that stretch will be reduced to 80 km/h. The closure is expected to remain until late summer.

There will be other temporary lane and ramp closures over the summer, according to the contractors.

Perhaps they could complete the ongoing work first? Just a thought. Or are they like a drunken contractor who needs a deposit from job B to complete job A.

I wouldn't know anything about that. Certainly not. But I'm also not a large scale numbered and bonded company. Stay in your lane folks. In this case you will literally have to to stay in your lane because we closed the rest of them.
