That said, Calabogie is such a quick/easy drive from Ottawa now that we should expect more development at the resort and surrounding lakes. I would love to see the ski hill get a bit more attention as the tallest hill in the region other than Mont Ste Marie.

I've heard that detailed design hasn't even begun beyond Calabogie Road, so it will be a while.
Meanwhile, it will be interesting to see if Burnstown starts growing too.

What route do you take ? I have been driving this route for thirty years.

My family has a cottage on Crane Lake, west of Muskoka.

We drive 417 W- > 17 W > Cobden -> Hwy 60 W to Huntsville -> Hwy 11 S -> Muskoka rd 3 W -> Rosseau -> 141 W -> N old Hwy 69 -> Jacklin Cres to lake.

We sometime take Bruce St through Renfrew and then Hwy 60 W instead of going to Cobden, we often stop in Pikwakanagan (Golden Lake) for cheap gas and Barry's Bay at the Dairy Freeze.

The latest Highway 417 closure in central Ottawa to tear down an old bridge and lift in a new one is happening the last weekend of July.

Contractors hired by the province will be doing this work over Preston Street, closing the highway from 8 p.m. Thursday, July 25 until early the morning of Monday, July 29.

The target reopening time is 6 a.m., but that can move depending on how the replacement is going.

Similar to previous rapid replacements, the 417 — part of the Trans Canada Highway — closes in both directions between the Carling Avenue and Metcalfe Street exits.

Eastbound drivers won't be able to get on the highway at Maitland Avenue during the closure; they'd just have to get off again about a kilometre later and drivers waiting to exit often back the highway up for an exit or two anyway.

Highway detours rely on Carling and Chamberlain avenues and Catherine Street, with Bronson Avenue connecting the two for people going east and Booth Street going west.

The city hasn't yet put out the kinds of detour maps it has in the past.

Preston Street also closes in two stages for this: the first between St. Anthony and Young streets directly at the overpass starting just after midnight on Wednesday, July 17 and the second one block north to Louisa Street at 8 p.m. July 25, matching the highway closure.

Drivers are asked to take Carling, Bronson and Gladstone Avenue instead. Other road users are presented with the Trillium pathway along the Line 2 tracks just to the west.

The ripple effects of these closures have snarled vehicle traffic in central Ottawa as highway drivers turn to other roads. Moving activities to a different time or different way of transportation such as transit, biking and/or walking can help.

CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning and All In A Day will have their usual live traffic updates on closure weekdays.

The bridges are near the end of their lifespans, according to the contractor partnership's website. This team previously replaced the bridges over Booth, Rochester and Percy streets, along with Bronson Avenue.

No other replacements are listed on their page. The team said it expects its work to all be finished next year.

The province still has to replace the 417 bridge over the canal - but it's not scheduled to start until ~2028. I don't think it's technically part of the project for the first set of bridges.

According to this story - mainstreeter.ca Metcalfe, Elgin and Main street will also have bridges replaced.

No mention of O'Connor - but I imagine that won't be too far behind - unless it's a much newer bridge than the rest of them ?

Hmmm. I can't imagine how the canal overpass can be replaced as a Rapid Bridge Replacement. I expect that it will need to be done 1/2 at a time, with detours for the other side. Maybe find a way to run 2-lanes per direction on 1/2 while the other 1/2 is replaced (and widened).

Any method that they use, it will be very disruptive to traffic for an extended period.

Maybe they could do the other bridges at the same time, and save some cost - since their replacement might not need to be 'Rapid' any more.

The canal bridges will be a rapid replacement, during the canals off season they will fill in and build the new bridges within the bounds of the canal and parkways, then slide them into place.

Ontop of Metcalfe Street, Elgin Street, Rideau Canal, Main Street that others have mentioned. There is also over the next few years Richmond, Pinecrest, Woodroffe and Maitland. And then after those (probably after the east downtown ones) there will be Holland, Parkdale, Fairmont and Bayswater.

Beware, Ottawa drivers. It’s time for another multi-day Queensway closure to accommodate a bridge replacement, this time at Preston Street.

The City of Ottawa has announced plans for detours around closed sections of Highway 417 starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, with reopening of those sections expected by 6 a.m. next Monday.

Eastbound lanes between Carling Avenue and Metcalfe Street and westbound lanes between Bronson and Parkdale avenues will be impacted.

An advisory from the city said Highway 417 on-ramps would also be closed eastbound at Maitland, Carling and Parkdale, and westbound at O’Connor, Lyon, Bronson and Rochester.

In addition, the advisory said, Booth Street would be closed northbound from Carling Avenue to Raymond Street from 7:30 p.m. on Thursday until 6 a.m. on Monday “to facilitate the Highway 417 westbound detour.”

The city also cautioned residents to anticipate “significant traffic and transit impacts” on Friday because of the concurrence of the Highway 417 closure, the closure of the western portion of the O-Train LRT system for maintenance and an Ottawa Redblacks Canadian Football League game at Lansdowne Park.

The peak impacts are expected between 3 and 11:30 p.m.,” the notice said.

Detours will be in effect for vehicles forced off Highway 417 by the bridge-replacement closure.

• Exit the highway at Metcalfe/Catherine
• Continue westbound on Catherine Street
• Continue onto Raymond Street
• Turn left onto Booth Street
• Turn right onto Carling Avenue
• Take the Highway 417 Carling/Kirkwood westbound on-ramp

• Continue eastbound on Carling Avenue
• Turn left on Bronson Avenue

Looks like they finished at least 4.5 hours early. Checked in on the livestream before bed and traffic is flowing as of 1:30am.

I expected it to be done before 6:00am considering they were already paving by early Sunday afternoon (maybe even earlier).

Edit: Forgot you could rewind the livestream. Looks like it re-opened sometime around 12:30am.

The MTO has begun planning to replace more downtown bridges starting in 2028.

Its Ottawa Downtown Queensway Bridges project will replace or rehabilitate seven bridges at four sites: Metcalfe Street, Elgin Street, the Rideau Canal, and Main Street.
