What a great story from a world I can only fantasize about while roasting here in the meteorological nightmare that is Sicily. Things are somehow more bearable when temperatures are ten degrees below seasonal at other times of the year. In the winter, ten degrees below seasonal is bitter cold, but there aren't many outdoor events and those that exist have contingencies like warming huts, or attract people that know what they're getting into. You dress appropriately. Ten degrees below seasonal at the height of the summer, in July or August, can either be a bit of a letdown or a bit of a reprieve from the heat. It brings you down to temps in the high teens which are perfectly fine. That's the kind of weekend we just had. On Saturday, it was 9, with a strong northwest wind making it feel more like 3. The sky was a steel grey and there were brief showers throughout the morning. My wife had to take my daughter to an outdoor kids birthday party and came back complaining about how she was freezing.

The coldest I've ever felt was at a softball tournament that took place in early June when I was in Grade 6. This was before the internet or even the Weather Network and, if I think back, people either didn't care so much about the weather or they just looked at the thermometer outside their window in the morning and decided what to wear for the rest of the day based on that. The day started off beautifully, so I got dressed in shorts and a t-shirt. The first game we played was fine. Then, midway through the second game right before lunch, the storm clouds rolled in and it started to rain heavily. We got soaked. Then the temperature just plummeted, and it was probably close to 10 degrees with a strong wind. I remember huddling under the bleachers with the gum, garbage and spit to shelter myself from the wind. I skipped a lot of our last game because I was in the men's room drying myself off with one of those old hand dryers that don't really exist any more where you press the button and it shoots out hot air. I remember hitting that button over and over again and just letting the warm air course over my exposed arms and thighs which were covered in goose bumps that looked like little volcanos. When I came back to the game, my coach yelled at me and told me I had missed two innings where they had to sub me for someone else. I complained that I was colder than I'd ever been in my entire life and that I needed to leave. I forgot what he said in reply, but the gist of it was to 🞵🞵🞵🞵 it up because there was always going to be weather like this throughout my life that I couldn't prepare for. But I was right: I haven't felt that cold since, and I vividly remember how awful that day was more than 30 years later.

This May definitely was not great, mainly because of that long cool, cloudy, windy stretch a couple weeks ago. We always get some 🞵🞵🞵🞵 weather in May, but more often at the beginning. I think we've been spoiled recently too, as the past few Mays were more summer than spring.

May 2025 had the lowest average high at 18, but the average low is pretty similar to most years. We didn't have any real cold weather, nothing below zero and no highs below 10. Just a lot of cool easterly and northeasterly winds and cloudy conditions. The most notable thing in those stats is how warm May 2024 was.

Been a while since I've done these, unfortunately the Environment Canada website changed and made retrieving the monthly data a lot more cumbersome, so outside of BC I have reduced the list of cities (it just takes too much time, and with work and kids, things are busy...), but here are the April and May averages this year!

April was pretty seasonal (about 1 degree above normal in BC) and May has been nearly bang on seasonal for BC, mild for Alberta, but downright well above seasonal for Winnipeg.

Finny enough, despite Nikko saying its been the worst spring ever (he has a point for rain and cloud cover) temperature wise Montreal has been bang on seasonal!

One new feature I've added are Pool Days! (PD) Any day with a high of and over 26. I choose 26 because its a decently rounded point for a warm day at the pool. Yes, there are 24 degree days with brilliant sunshine and no wind that are great at the pool for most, and there are rainy wet 27 degreed days that 🞵🞵🞵🞵 for swimming. Its just a fun general measure for "hot" days.

I mean close to 70% cloud cover will boost the night time temperatures. Unimaginable in May really. Pretty sure that must be an all-time record. Mind is blown MTL is having the mildest nights with all the heat out West.
Also we had a week of above average temperature which helped with the average.

For me a pool day needs to have 3 things:

1. At least 28C outside temperature
2. Sunshine (some cumulus clouds are also fine)
3. Water temperature of at least 25C.

Bonus points if it's humid. I associate pool and beach with tropical weather not with desert dryness (that has to do with what we are used to).

Very far from beach conditions today...

20C with some sunshine early on but clouds this afternoon. Cleared up again in the evening. Some big gusts out there. It cannot be worst than yesterday but definitely not good enough for early June.

Low of 9C this morning.

The warmspot was Upsala, ON at 29.7C.

Warmest low was Muskreat Dam, ON at 15.5C.

The Pool Day data is interesting, but not exactly representative of the reality this early into the season. I have a small unheated inflatable pool that's about 4 foot deep. It would usually not take too long to warm up, but it's barely usable right now. I used it once when it was 27C last week, but the water was still too cold.

My pool won't be opened until later this week, Then it will have to clarify and be cleaned, and the heat turned on. It won't be ready until the third week of June.

The backyard pool season in Moncton only really lasts about 10 weeks. Hardly worth it really, but, I like the aesthetics of a backyard pool.

Currently 16C and sunny in Moncton at 10 AM, going up to 23C this afternoon. The weather forecast for the weekend has improved. They are now calling for sun during the day on Saturday (previously rain).

The trip to Xiaoliuqiu Island (Little Okinawa) off the coast of Kaohsiung was a bit of a bust. I normally come here in the winter, which is the dry season in Taiwan. The temps are usually around 26C, and the water is around 25C. Humidity is low.

Late spring is a different beast. I was expecting the heat and humidity, but the relentless rain made things difficult. I wasn't able to swim with the turtles (poor water visibility due to the rough waters), and most of the time, I was finding shelter as another wave of rain came pouring down on me. Bummer.




























































If you're at all curious as to what Xiaoliuqiu looks like when it isn't raining, here's a drone video I did a few years back. I definitely wasn't getting the drone in the air thid trip.

Great Pics! It was really rainy here in my area of Japan yesterday too (and quite cool, only 21) but its sunny and warming up today! (high of 28).

Yeah, its just a very broad basic measure. Obviously there are other conditions (such as sunshine, wind, etc...) and everyone has their own personal taste (as Nikko was saying he needs at least 28, but I'm fine with 24 on a sunny calm day, and some will even swim at 20 on a sunny day) so 26 just feels like a good ballpark figure for a day most would be inclined to swim.

And I agree with your point, for example Halifax only had an average high of 16, but had three pool days, while Ashcroft had an average high of 24 and nine pool days. Given the more consistent warmth those 26+ days in Ashcroft are far more likely to have been days where people actually swam in a pool.

You are extrapolating too much from this statistical construct. It's virtually guaranteed more were swimming outdoors in Halifax as it has outdoor heated pools open in May, like at the Waegwoltic Club. A few newer towers have rooftop pools too. Ashcroft is a small town of about 1,600 that does not have condo towers and major public facilities.

25C (humidex of 26) and mainly sunny today. The sun had an orange tint at some point this afternoon but it was only for about an hour. Gonna enjoy it though.

Low of 11C this morning. Same temperature than during the 🞵🞵🞵🞵 of the weekend. But this time i wasn't depressed when I looked out of window.

The warmspot was Kirkland Lake, ON at 30.6C

Warmest low was Goderich, ON at 16.8C.

Monday we had 100kmph winds and it picked up it for so bad we had to run for our life's thankfully it started to rain and the fire died down. But that wind broke trees and power poles in town. Had to doge debre of it hadn't rained we woulda lost the town.
