Weren't the elevators one of the heritage-protested features? Though I guess that doesn't require that they be functional.

I don't think they were in the middle. Escalators were though IIRC.

The 4 remaining elevators were past the middle.. Towards the back of the store more so. like 3/4 in. There were once, i learned, 12..6 for up, 6 for down.. In 1947 they removed many since an escalator had been installed.

I believe in the above photo by cheswick you can see the outlines of the two curved elevator banks. It is my understanding that they are being removed for this project.

Does anyone know if there's structural work required to strengthen the existing building where the hole is being cut out? They're removing the core of the building. Or is the building just so big it makes no difference here.

Not really. It will have a ring beam around the hole to support the skylight. If there was ever a hurricane or something in Winnipeg. It’s the building I would hide in. It’s a serious building. The main difference between it and Eatons, which was wood frame and not easily redeveloped.

I don’t know if you can answer this Viking, but is that hollow core that they used in the floors for the bay? I wouldn’t have thought that hollow core was a thing back in the 20’s.

From what I have been reading on the Bay building, its was the largest reinforced poured concrete building in Canada when it was constructed.

Cast in place. They placed thin metal formwork to create ribs. Then just left the formwork in place. When exposed it looks like it was poured yesterday.

Very cutting edge. In the distance roof shots it looked like hollow-core.

Where the crane sits today they had a cement plant and pumps to pump it up to where it was needed during construction

Imgur increased their hosting and bandwidth capabilities, so where as they used to automatically compress and shrink photos so that their servers don't get overloaded, they can now afford to allow people to upload their photos completely uncompressed. So since most cameras take photos now at 3000x4000 pixels, it'll upload in that size. You'd have to re-size it manually before uploading it.

Imgur previously had the ability to choose a size of thumbnail when getting a link. But I can't seem to find that now. I'm guessing they removed it.
