Burnaby Southeast Bikeway Upgrade Project

We’re working to make the cycling network in the Southeast Area and Big Bend safer and better connected for everyone. Currently, we’re reviewing the existing conditions to understand challenges and opportunities, and to find ways to improve cycling experience and safety in these areas. Phase 1 engagement has started, and we want to hear about your experiences travelling through the project area. Your feedback will help shape potential cycling improvements, which we'll share with the community during Phase 2 in fall 2025.

New Expo Deck path to open late May
April 11 2025 – Vancouver Seawall and Seaside Greenway path users will soon be closer to the water when walking or cycling by Science World. Construction on a new compacted gravel path between Creekside Community Centre and Science World is now underway. The new wider, separated path is anticipated to open in late May, improving access around False Creek this summer.
While the new gravel path is constructed, Seawall and Seaside Greenway path users will continue using the temporary detour routes along Ontario, Switchmen and Quebec streets.

I rode past it yesterday and at the east end it looks 100% ready to go, and at the west end only needs permanent road lines painted. This new road has a great separated bike lane which will be a very welcome change from the alligatored old road with no shoulders.

I might be posting this on the wrong thread, more like public desorder.
Once every 3 or 4 months I hear a confrontation of a close call or blockage, but never physical.

As someone who used to live steps away from that intersection, I am glad I don't live (or drive, or bike) there any more.

Biked to this area over the weekend from the 4th Street. Still not clear who exactly will use this and what problem does it solve.

One would think that building a properly separated North-South bike path through Brentwood along Willington or perhaps North-South path through Metrotown would be a higher priority.

I'm not entirely clear on the target ridership either. The major destinations in the area seem to be BCIT and the Burnaby City Hall complex, including Burnaby Village and the Shadbolt Center. This gives folks access to the latter bunch of those without any serious grades from the Central Valley Greenway. BCIT already has somewhat reasonable access from the Greenway via Willingdon.

It also allows access to the Burnaby Lake complex from the south side of Burnaby, although the grades between the central valley and the ridge along Kingsway are pretty brutal. Perhaps this is less of an obstacle in the era of electric bikes?

If they improve access to the future overpass by building multiuse path along Sperling and then Claude it could nicely connect Deer Lake with Burnaby Lake and create like a figure 8 walking/biking loop around two lakes. Biking along Burnaby lake trails is still banned I think, so I guess that would need to change. This would be of course for recreational purposes only. I do not see many people using this to commute. There is already separated bike path along Kensington that can be used for that purpose with a nice wide separated bike lane crossing the highway.

Previously, I'd biked to that area not knowing it was banned. Any idea why it's banned?

Biking is only allowed on the Freeway Trail and Avalon Trail on the south side of the park. Connecting Glencairn Drive to Avalon Avenue. That is what this bridge will connect to. However the equestrian people at Burnaby lake are trying to get bikes banned from those trails too.
