A backlot

The establishing shots show Hollywood Boulevard, including a daylight view of The Pantages, but despite the street sign outside the bar, I think the news-stand could've been a backlot. There's a kink in the road just beyond the news-stand which seems typical of a set where they don't want to show streets disappearing into the distance.
Yes HossC and Scott Charles, it is a movie set.
I've read a study by Philippe Garnier on the making of this movie and Garnier shows that when the newsstand reappears next, its layout on the street changes !

This is from the Tustin News, April 17 1986. Looking through old newspaper references, every reference is to this store in Tustin. No references to anywhere in LA County.

By Jove, I think you've got it, Yabb, and welcome to the thread!

O.C. Register

Apparently a fire happened there around 15 years ago, an unattended burning candle, and then the community started a Go Fund Me page to save the historic building.

From ABC7: (News video at the link, too.)

Along El Camino Real in Old Town Tustin sits dozens of historic buildings, but there's one that stands out. Built in 1885, a small, red store is considered one of the oldest
buildings in the entire city. A sign on the front of the building denotes that it was home to the first doctor's office in the town. Locals know it as the Jabberwocky.

"This building is the prime building in Orange County," owner Margaret Pottenger said.

In 1959, Pottenger says she fell in love with the store's large bay windows and began renting it for $75 a month. She opened a clothing store, selling only elegant dresses
and apparel for teenage girls, virtually unheard of at that time.

The name for the store came from the comic "Gasoline Alley," she says. "Jabberwocky was the latest teenage jargon at the time," Pottenger said.

Five years later, she bought the store and moved into the house behind it, where she's lived ever since. She ran the Jabberwocky until 1988, when she began leasing
it to other tenants.

You've found the shop, but there are a couple of mentions of Jabberwocky Childrenswear in the 1968 and 1969 CDs in downtown LA. I wonder if they're connected. Both addresses appear to be offices: 110 E 9th Street and 746 S Los Angeles Street.

It might have got its name from "teenage jargon", but the origin must be the 1871 nonsense poem by Lewis Carroll, which added the words "galumphing" and "chortle" to the English language.

Jabberwocky

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

I don't have the address on hand so I thought someone might help me out.

It's still standing, right?
There were two similar buildings on the northern corners of Wilshire and Oxford (see below) - both are gone. According to urbandiachrony:

"The two structures, along with the nearby Chapman Market, were considered true exemplars of the city’s Spanish Baroque Revival commercial architecture. Nonetheless, the Wilshire Central was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for the Ahmanson Center towers, now known as the Wilshire Colonnade. Its slightly older sibling survived until 1998, when it too was torn down and replaced by a one-story pharmacy."

More significantly, this pair of buildings, similar but not matching, is attributed to Morgan, Walls & Clements. I know it will never be 1929 again, and thank God for that in a about 1,000 ways, but I'd like to have on pikes the heads of those who decided to replace them with what is at the north corner of Wilshire and Oxford today....

Just for the fun of it.

Oh, I almost forgot.

AND I'd like to know if the extremely TALL Palm Tree is still there. If it is, I can't even imagine how tall it would be now!
Vincent Simeone & Co was a tailor at 3727 Wilshire Boulevard.

There are now four palm trees in front of the current building, but all smaller that the one in the original picture.

I think the blade sign says "Lenoir's Deb."

Found a Wm H Lenton's beauty shop in the 1936 LA City phone book.

https://calisphere.org/item/8433c8c89617f12c41ee23f4cbaa415e/

That address also is connected with a Vincent Simeone's Custom Tailors / Haberdashers, which I assume is a descendant of the shop on the left.

It was outside Woolworths at 4th and Pine in Long Beach. The building is still standing, but was more recognizable before a recent facelift. The Walker's building is also still there, as is the Kress sign in the distance. Pretty much every building on the right has gone.

As I was sitting having breakfast at one of my local "restaurants", I noticed some vintage photos on the wall.

One was an old timey-wimey photo of the Nora Sterry Elementary School.

The present school is at 1730 Corinth Ave, LA 90025.
It's definitely not the old school in the photo.

Noirishers, please post a photo of the old school...

Thank you.

No picture of the school itself but here's one of the students.

LAPL

Students at Nora Sterry Elementary School play games on the school yard, after being evacuated from their classrooms, due to a GAS LEAK.

Photo dated: February 27, 1956.

The following is based on info from norasterry.wordpress.com. It has a lot more information and photos.

The Nora Sterry Elementary School was known as the Sawtelle Boulevard School before 1941. The building in the photo below was demolished in 1955. The small building on the left is the original Fourth Street School built in 1914. This appears to have survived as the Nora Sterry Children's Center on the corner of Sawtelle and Nebraska.

Sawtelle Boulevard School built 1923 Located at 1727 Sawtelle Boulevard in Sawtelle, California. Notable Los Angeles Architect for this School Building was Edgar H. Cline.

I have a mystery location for you sleuths. It's from an old photo album dated 1943/44.

Currently on eBay

I've been trying to read the entrance 'marquee' on the building to the right but it's simply too blurry.

There may be clues in the other photographs in the album so if you want to check them out HERE.

I've decided to post one more from the same album.

Do you think we can find the buildings by using the coordinated on the street sign.

I have faith in you.

The dark blade sign near the center belongs to the San Carlos Hotel, so we're looking down 5th from Grand towards Olive.

Here's the best guess I can manage. Please forgive my horrendous cartography.

Here are the distances as stated on the sign in the photo of the man (that's a MARINES uniform, yes?). For the distances to make sense, I would wager that the photo was taken somewhere within the yellow circle.

Here's a 1950s photo of San Juan Capistrano that looks similar but is not a match:

Orange County Public Library

Well, that's the best I can do... I'm passing the buck to the rest of you who are far better sleuths than I am!

As long as we're looking for vintage school photos, can anyone post any early images of San Pedro Street School, which has been in operation at 1655 San Pedro Street since 1866? Of course, the address would have been different prior to the Great Renumbering of 1890.
