No, I've lived in Edmoton and Winnipeg. Edmonton, in particular, has a bad homeless problem.

Nobody has come up with a feasible solution. However, we do know that a Housing First strategy that Medicine Hat implemented 20 years ago, had incredible results. The city gave homeless people a bachelor pad, food for a month, and a bus pass, as well as free health care (prescriptions).

It actually saved the city money, since there was a drastic reduction in EMT and Police visits, and lowered incarceration/hospital visits. Unfortunately for some reason, Canada never expanded the program.

I know what does not work- arresting homeless people, and jailing them for camping out along riverbanks or shelters.

Vancouver should really be building low income housing, so that this problem is addressed. As a result, by the 2000s, cities began experiencing problems with homeless people.

A very rational post, not at all unhinged, or bizarre. You sure showed us.

On another tack, it's amusing seeing the potshots at the part of Poilievre's platform about wokeness. Dismantling it is going to be somewhat like the People's Front of Judea taking on the apparatus of the state of Rome, so no, strictly speaking it's not the most pressing concern at the moment. But this idea that it's, what, a phantom of the hyper-active conservative imagination? That's positively bonkers.

Ford-Poilievre rift on full display as federal race upended by strategic leaks

“If Poilievre loses his seat? He’s done. He’s gone,” said one Conservative source. “And so is Jenni. And if the Liberals win a majority, the knives will be out for Jenni as well. There’ll have to be a graceful exit.”

“They never liked each other. There’s so much story on that,” a PC source familiar with the dynamics between the two parties said. “I don’t know if he wants a federal seat, but he wants options. And keeping himself separate from the Poilievre brand helps with that.” The bad blood has also spilled across Ontario’s borders, with media reports suggesting that Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston — a close ally of Ford who endorsed him in the provincial election earlier this year — is on bad terms with the Poilievre camp.

*snip*

After the no-show, Jenni Byrne, Poilievre’s campaign manager, texted Houston’s team angrily, saying this was an “insult” and warning she wouldn’t forget it, according to reporting by the Globe and Mail. Some Ontario PC insiders believe Ford’s team may be behind at least some of the leaks to the media, quietly seeding discontent. “I don’t know if it’s Ford himself,” the source said, “but yeah, it seems like it’s on purpose. Strategic.”

*snip*

At the heart of this divide is a network of personalities with deep histories and lingering resentments — particularly between Ford’s inner circle and Byrne. “Jenni was Ford’s principal secretary when he first became premier,” the source explained. “There was a civil war in his office. She lost. She got thrown out and had to lick her wounds in Ottawa.” That departure, sources say, set off a chain of political retaliation and score-settling that continues to shape federal-provincial dynamics to this day.

You have over 500 posts in this thread, the most of anyone by far, but the moment I post something you say "nothing to see here! go ride a bike!"

Since I'm here tonight, here's something for the folks who deny that the mainstream media is essentially a propaganda wing of ABC Inc. Did anyone really think that only conservatives like Trump would ever pose in front of a plane on the campaign trail, or was the opportunity to craft yet another baseless narrative too tempting?

There is a difference between arresting homeless people for being homeless, and arresting homeless people who go around committing crimes as repeat offenders. There is a difference in arresting people for doing drugs, and making sure they aren't using the drugs by means of prevention. The real reason, I believe, for the homeless crisis however, is the trickle down effect from increasingly unaffordable price of housing at the top of the income pyramid. We know also, that the societal attitude against social housing, being stigmatized, means our governments don't do enough here, and it's politically motivated. Rhetorically speaking, how can the taxpayer house people who are hopeless or destitute, when that same working taxpayer can't afford their own housing?

Anyone who believes the CBC should be defunded, especially after what is occurring in America, needs their head examined.

The alternative is clogging up the healthcare system with their acute medical needs from being unhoused. Either way everyone pays for it. Get over it. I don't like it either but I also don't like tax cuts for corporations and elites and yet here we are. Sometimes we have to do and fund things we don't like.. Sorry, not, sorry.

How is that any different than the difference between people living in inner city apartments, and apartment dwellers who go around committing crimes, and are repeat offenders?

Believe it or not, the vast majority of homeless people are not violent. Don't let a bad experience shape your opinion of all of them. If there are tents along the river, out of the way of almost everything, or tents beside a shelter itself, would it be beneficial for the residents of the tents to be arrested and jailed, just for trying to stay someplace out of the way, and not in a shelter itself- which are notoriously violent?

The real reason for the homeless problem in Canada, is the reason I mentioned in the prior post. The Government for whatever reason stopped building affordable housing and townhouses sometime during the 80s. Within 15 years, the homeless issue was noticeable for the firsts time. The key to solving the homeless issue, is for a universal basic income, and more affordable housing units.

It's the income gap. Government's in Western nations decided to cut taxes to large corporations and the wealthy top 5%. The revenue the Government lost by doing this, was 100x what it would have cost to have every citizen housed. The whole "why should we build housing for the homeless, when it will increase my tax bill?" is such a crock of shit. Stop with the corporate welfare, and the divert the revenue to the less fortunate. Problem solved.

That was 2016, Trumpiness didn't exist back then. Trump had not yet even tainted such common things as golden bathrooms, Tesla, well meaning conservatives, etc., and Trudeau isn't running in this election.

Neither is Trump.

Carney, Biden, Harris et al. all have or had campaign planes. Everyone does. I guess that major media figures stooping to "Hitler was a vegetarian" lows in their efforts to shift public opinion away from Poilievre is only visible to those of us outside of the hive mind bubble. Which, they well know, is precisely why propaganda works.

Pure bullshit.

Our leading ally and trading partner elected a madman, that is compromised by Russia, and doing his best to dismantle the American empire. Even worse, he will not shut up about annexing Canada, and collapsing our economy with insane tariffs. This is the most serious existential thread we have ever experienced in the 157 years of Confederacy.

You are living in denial, by pretending the Trump threats, and taunts are no big deal.

Still here for a few more moments. Without meaning to sound patronizing, you're arguing, as they say, with a strawman. What I said was that anyone outside of the bubble can see the frankly disgusting characterization of Poilievre as the Canadian coming of Trump as the bald-faced propaganda it is, but the media class continue to do it because it's working. The risk-to-reward ratio is in their favour to do so.

Simply put, it saves the taxpayer money while effectively solving the homelessness crisis. It's a win for literally everyone.

I don't know if Poilievre is a vegetarian.

I think the reality is, Poilievre is not the right person for the times, he is too extreme, too characteristic of what is going on with MAGA, and MAGA has turned out to be much worse than predicted. By definition, the Cons attract those fringe elements, you know, the deplorables; they always have a voice in that party. If the Conservatives had a more palatable (moderate) leader, showing more empathy and substance, they would probably still be winning bigly.

PS - Don't be in denial and think that Trump isn't a big deal in this election.
