Naturally Pierre has a place to put the people? Right... right?

CPC voters seem like the type that would open up their homes, cook meals, provide employment or training...

Picking on the most vulnerable with no credible or proven solution - sounds like Pierre who in 20 years as an MP did nothing for them.

Who can blame young voters for turning away from the Libs.
The 'age cohort' issue suggests a degree of unified thought and action that I don't think exists at any level.

Some of those boomer parents are also dealing with boomerang kids who are back at home, not just in their 20s but beyond, and or rendering financial assistance to their offspring.
Others may be quite well off when looking at the asset value of their home; but have very low current or prospective retirement income.......

****

There's no question that young adults looking to get into the housing market, or doing so, are straining financially in a way that their parents did not.
But I think playing this up as some sort of generation war is a gross over simplification of things that isn't terribly helpful.

****

Also.....'lavish free dental care?' Really? Who doesn't enjoy the luxury of time at the dentist getting a root canal? 3 appointments........have your gums frozen.....hours in the chair, and if you don't have insurance.....a $2,500 bill once you factor in crowns.

I'm sure there are some multi-millionaire boomers for whom the money is no hardship....and who enjoy an odd form of masochism. But I don't think your describing this program properly at all.

The program only assists households with less than $90,000 in income, and even then it only covers 60%; full coverage is only for households with less then $70,000 in income; and only for those who do not have insurance otherwise.
All for medically necessary services, not mani-pedis and shiatsu at the spa.

What a weird take.

Doug Ford's internal polling company Campaign Research has the LPC up 14 points in Ontario based off a massive sample size (3000). They were in the field this Monday and Tuesday. So completely post debate.

An internal poll done in PP's riding has him 2 points away from the Liberal candidate Bruce Fanjoy.

Is it as cold hearted as destroying the young peoples hopes of ever owning a home, raising rents with unchecked immigration, and lowering wages with temporary workers, making life so unaffordable for low income addicts they have no other choice but tent cities.

And you’re gonna vote for the people that did that… again.

Harper started it and I believe house prices as a % increased more under his tenure than Trudeaus.

The tax proposals by Pierre only benefit the wealthy - they do not help those who dream of owning a home. They are also built on a pipe dream that he will get the municipalities to do what he wants. His projections on housing starts are also virtually impossible to realize.

So are mark carneys plans. He wants to start churning out factory homes for $70,000 a pop, but then there’s land, roads, hydro, sewer, water, and the fact that you couldn’t build a 400 square foot home for that price. It would be over $100,000

That’s coming from someone who builds rtm houses.

https://winnipegsun.com/news/carneys-housing-plan-faces-scrutiny-from-industry-veteran

The ridiculous idea that we could start pumping out 500,000 homes a year when we can’t even build 300,000 a year now.

You’d have to essentially double the work force, in a year.

So more immigration?

So higher housing costs…

And we’re back where we started. But at least carneys developer friends got rich!

So harper doubled the cost of rent and housing too? Show me those stats.

As much as I dislike the Federal Liberal (and multi-partisan provincial policy set) that gave us far too many TFWs and Foreign students when we had insufficient housing or jobs for them....

Suggesting that jailing people for being homeless is somehow not cruel or excusable is beyond the pale.

Just stop. If that doesn't sound disgusting to you, you have a serious, serious problem.

****

Its perfectly reasonable to suggest that encampments are not an acceptable state of affairs.

Its perfectly reasonable to suggest immigration and housing policies have been unwise.

Its perfectly reasonable to state that some portion of those in encampments may be suffering from mental illness and/or serious addiction issues, which require treatment; and which, ultimately, were someone to refuse same, yet demonstrate they simply could not and would not be a functional member of society....compulsory intervention should be considered.

But that should be focused on getting someone into their right, sober mind........and then intervening to set them up with proper housing, and such other supports (employment, pension, education as required).

****

I'm no defender of things the Liberals have done wrong. But I don't see an endorsable alternative in the current Conservative platform.

It does not have a sufficient number/quality of better answers, while providing many other prescriptions that are either amoral, unconstitutional or just unwise.

I have a cousin who lives in PP's riding. Normally that side of the family has been as blue Conservative as you can get.

This election, she's all in for the Liberals. She has no love for PP at all and wants to see him gone.

I hadn't realized too that his riding was targeted by the Long Ballot Committee. And that there are 91 names on the ballot in that riding, listed alphabetically.

I can't find a clear ballot picture on the web, but from what I can see, that puts PP on the second or third fold, in the second column. (The first column goes down to KARVAS, and the first name on the 4th fold of the second column starts with ST, so PP would be on the second or third section). The Liberal candidate, "FANJOY" would be in a simialr position but in the first column I'd guess.

I think it makes perfect sense to wish that the Liberals, under a new leader, did more to acknowledge the ways they've fumbled in the past few years. But I also don't think it makes sense to vote for the other guys simply to penalize them.

If we're just soberly observing both parties' policy platforms, the Liberals' plans are better thought-through, more suited to this moment (particularly on international relations) and simply stronger on many issues that the Conservatives have tried to own. The Liberal housing plan is more comprehensive, and the plan for resource development is more detailed than the Conservatives' "shovel-ready zones," or the constiutionally dodgy pledges to just rubber-stamp projects regardless of provincial jurisdiction.

We can also critique the Liberals' deficit spending all we like, but if we're headed into a low-growth period or a recession, it's not unexpected. The Conservatives' "trust us, GDP will soar thanks to us and pay for it all" plan is nonsensical.

And of course the Liberals have the advantage of not being afflicted by the weird anti-woke streak that PP brings to his party. The Conservatives' pledge to defund "woke" university research, for example, is still in its platform, and is exactly the kind of thing that is aligning Canadian conservatism with MAGA types, at exactly the wrong time. It would also completely undermine any hope of trying to benefit from a U.S. brain drain.

Tim Houston out with a great video... if the CPC had Tim as a candidate for PM it would be an easy win for them. Really unfortunate they got the candidate no one likes or wants.

Does Tim have CPC leadership aspirations? It seems there is always a conservative that is trying to challenge the leader. Unless an upset, I suspect Pierre's leadership has weeks left. I for one will be super happy to see him and Ana gone.

Typical Conservate ideas that are not fully worked out.

Prisons for those sentence to under two years are run by the provinces. The federal prisons cover the 2 year +.

In addition to being heartless is also nonsense. The police, prosecution, courts and jails are not under federal control.

Also milking foreign students for all that they could became a major component of most post secondary institution’s business model under Harper.

Yeah one of the biggest beneficiaries of the dental care plan is children. Last I checked over half a million underprivileged children.

And poor seniors. Not globe trotting, winter home owning Boomers. Elderly people living off pensions.

But in typical conservative fashion, any basic necessity is viewed as a luxury, and a program rife with abuse.

Their stats are misleading bullshit, they'll use nominal prices only, when in reality it's affordability that's the correct metric.

JT boosted unaffordability greatly. Real estate costs (whether it's rents or monthly mortgage payments) went up by a lot more than they did under Harper. That's because JT did a lot of great work (from a Boomer / Landed Gentry PoV) on the supply/demand imbalance.

(The ~2008 GFC doubled nominal real estate prices overnight, as interest rates went to the floor and stayed there, but affordability did not change, and neither did rents, so no one noticed except people like me who already held a bunch of Canadian real estate at the time of the GFC.)

(To add to the above point, just look at the obviously visible metric "tent cities under Harper" vs "tent cities under JT". That'll tell you everything you need to know about which PM created a housing crisis and which one didn't.)

Those buy a business immigration scheme were very destructive.

For many small business owners it was a quick exit scheme to sell their small business through these immigration consultants. You ended up with a small cafe in rural Canada or a convince store in urban Canada etc being purchased by a foreign investor that did not care about the business, they just needed to hold it for 2-3 years and then they could dump it.

If you wondering what caused us to lose so many of our small business in Canada it was the Harper nonsense.

Canadian tuition is still affordable relative to the US. It the foreign students end up with legitimate education and degrees from a legitimate universities they are coming out ahead. If they are taken advantage by scam artists than that is not good.

There were no tent cities in Moncton under Harper, and only the baseline number of indigent druggies and mentally ill homeless people.

Under JT, homelessness exploded and drug use became rampant. Petty theft and panhandling is everywhere. The difference is quite striking.
