The plastic bag ban is anti-science, and a perfect example of a well meaning policy having unintended consequences (increased plastic consumption and environmental waste). Plastic straws are a different story though.
Sure the ban is ridiculous and I guess you don't use straws because their is probably no consumer use of plastic where there are less alternatives than straws. Try drinking bubble tea from a paper straw. Guess they didn't do a GBA+ analysis of the impact of that.

But the point is you can't announce with 10 days to go policies that are associated with Trump. I know they thought let's announce repealing the overreach of Trudeau in the final stretch but it seems poorly thought out.

If it's just decisions that didn't properly consider or acknowledge relevant scientific findings, that's a lapse in reason-based decision making rather than anti-science since science is still there doing it's thing unscathed as long as the first two things don't happen.
You can call it what you want, but the point is that there's actually a decent body of evidence that plastic bag bans lead to increased plastic consumption. It's a bad policy.

Paper straws are an inferior product, but I don't think there's any evidence that they lead to increased plastic consumption or environmental waste.

Mainstreet CEO says his data from today is showing an increase in Bloc support in Quebec and CPC support nationally. Today's 2 point LPC lead will be gone, and the CPC will lead the popular vote in their poll tomorrow.

OK I see what you are measuring. If we look at only plastic reduction. So on the bag band we have massive inconvenience extra plastic consumption thus having the opposite effect and I would argue extra miles driven because of more trips. I walk by a grocery store at least once a week and don't buy anything because I don't have a bag with me or buy less and end up driving to the grocery store once I get home.

Straw bans probably do save plastic waste. A few people with sensitive teeth have to suffer with paper straws and a lot of others skip the straw where possible. Some drinks become downright unpleasant.

Of course we could ban plastic gloves. There is no alternatives so consumption will go down for sure. A few extra diseases be damned.

Plastic wrap has reusable alternatives and foil. Sure many will just throw out the food and it will go bad faster exposed to more air but it will also save consumption.

Classic Liberal virtue signaling policy with the most impact for the least gain.

I'm also in Winnipeg South Centre. I plan on going during the Jets game tomorrow (it's only game 1). I hope my plan pays off. I place a high value on my time and I am out of town for election day.

So back where they were a week ago then.

That went LPC+4 three days later

Perhaps I am not a normal person. But I find I am using less plastic bags now that under the old system. The drawer where I stuffed single use grocery store plastic bags into to reuse is substantially empty. The ones that show up in their now are from bags of bread, oranges, apples or potatoes.

I don't use either plastic or paper all that much. Who needs a straw to drink a beverage. Humans are capable of drinking from glasses without the us of straws.

No one is proposing elimination of plastics. The goal is to reduce the use to those cases where it is required.

Again who is proposing elimination of all plastics. The goal is to be less wasteful and use it where required. Doing that our impact on the environment and wildlife is reduced.

My parents have considered switching from Bloc to Carney. (They would never have considered voting for a clown like JT.)

I think they actually just voted, I’d have to ask them for whom

The policy isn't meant to affect plastic consumption; it's meant to reduce plastic waste making it into the environment, particularly in waterways and sensitive ecosystems. I don't know what the evidence shows for that metric, but those are different things. Increased plastic consumption could also mean more of it gets contains in landfills without leeching into the environment or that consumption increases temporarily because products that contain more plastic are used much longer before being discarded. Kind of like how an electric car causes more carbon emissions during its production but has lower overall carbon emissions since it emits so much less after it's created.

A policy is only bad if it fails to achieve its goal (or make meaningful progress toward it) or if there are downsides that counteract the benefit gained by achieving the goal. Not if it fails to achieve a goal it never had.

Who are all these fragile MAGA men who can’t use a paper straw. I had two just today in drinks. They didn’t disintegrate or even get mushy. Are they deepthroating them or something?

Thank you for illustrating my point.

As for advanced voting, I also waited over an hour in a very slow moving line in Vancouver today. They warned us it would probably be busier later if we thought about leaving and coming back.

Unless you suffer from some disability that makes using a straw necessary (or it's a bendy straw and you are under 10 years old), you should just drink from the glass.

Agreed. Plastics straws are obviously better but the drawbacks of a paper one are minor. We should get rid of plastic single use cups as well.

Yes, because I'm still going to vote!
You are passionate about politics but don't even bother to exercise your civic right, which should be a duty for all eligible Canadians.
My friend in Moscow wishes they could vote Putin out. We take democracy for granted in Canada.

On of the weird ones is the conservatives deciding to reject de Jong as a candidate. Now his is running as an independent. So they though he was unqualified to run as an MP.

He is running as an independent and has a good chance of either winning or perhaps splitting the vote so the Liberals will get in.

Quote:
Les Leyne: Refusal to explain de Jong dismissal says a lot about Conservatives' attitude to B.C.

The fact the credentials of the veteran MLA were dismissed makes you wonder if the Conservative brain trust in Ottawa has the slightest clue about B.C.

I do not care how he fares in the election. But the Conservative Party’s opaque, last-minute decision to dump him because he was “unqualified” ranks as one of the major blunders of this election campaign. It raises questions that go beyond de Jong’s career.

De Jong told the National Post this week that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre had asked him for an endorsement during his successful 2022 leadership run, which he gave.

That led to an invitation to de Jong to consider running for them. After the incumbent decided to retire and the nomination opened up, he got all the required blessings, spent a year recruiting 2,000 new members to the party and prepared for a nomination contest.

Then five days before the vote last month, the party headquarters told him his application had been denied. A 25-year-old newcomer won the nod.

De Jong was a powerful cabinet minister (forests) when Poilievre was a 22-year-old gofer to former Canadian Alliance Leader Stockwell Day.

He held six cabinet posts under two premiers from 2001 to 2017 and was an effective critic for the last seven years in opposition.

I like straws at restaurants, For me I dont mind the paper straws… but when I had a slurpee… it was sad, The little spoon at the end just folds. And the cup I’m using to hold the slurpee has more plastic in it than a couple dozen straws. Just like at Wendy’s, massive plastic cup… paper straw. Just dumb. Can’t they just make them out of corn plastic so they can easily breakdown.

But straw’s definitely have a purpose for disabled people. Especially plastic ones, metal straws scare the shit out of me for some reason. It just seems so wrong. Gum cutters… ugghh

Metal straws are dangerous, especially for kids.

The Conservative Party, as we know it, is done for if the Liberals win by 60+ seats. It will split in two. There is zero chance that they carry on, losing this election by a greater margin than 2019 and 2021. Heads will roll.

Hard to say. We are in for a lot of chaos on the right and in the West should the Libs win a majority. They might just blame Trump. Which is kind of correct and even keep Poilievre. Or see a more centrist Conservative win. Ford perhaps will ride in to the rescue.
