Lots of people with that look in "hip" parts of our cities these days - definitely not out of place in Montreal. In fact I'd go as far to say that's a very Montreal looking screencap.

Of the places I've been in the last couple years I'd say Melbourne and Montreal have the highest percentage of dudes with moustaches and square framed glasses.

It's meant to be ironic.

Guys sporting mustaches and square glasses are like living memes. It’s totally ironic. They know it’s ugly, but they still do it because it’s kinda funny.

I kinda wish I could pull off the look but alas I’m just a bearded non-glasses plaid wearing West End Toronto Guy.

Which confirms my view that Anglo-Saxons (and by that I include the Québécois due to their living in an ocean of Anglo-Saxons and of course adopting willingly or unwillingly the same traits) have awful tastes for clothing and appearance. You'd never see dudes like that here (although you do see more and more young men with moustache, which is already awful enough, probably the influence of online medias dominated by the Anglophone world, but these glasses, no, no way you'd see that here).

So, what do you think of Prime Minister Carney’s French? Not bad?

Here those who have a moustache (thankfully still a small minority of young men) don't do it because it's funny. The French would never wear something, or cut their hair in a way, that would be "funny", because appearance here is scrutinized, and people hate to be mocked (for example, you never see people with hair died purple or orange here, whereas I see lots of them when I travel to Spain). Those who have a moustache do it because they imagine it's trendy and it sets them appart.

In terms of glasses, the new trend among young men is super thick glasses, which I find ugly too, but at least it doesn't look like a caricature from the 1980s.

Like these sorts of glasses:

Although I haven't seen yet the combo of moustache + thick glasses.

What dominates among young men now here is beard (which I hate too). Shaved young men (that's called "glabre" in French, your vocabulary item of the day) are rarer and rarer.

Any thoughts on Mark Carney’s French? lol

I think this guy displays the two different types/styles of glasses well that are shown in the previous posts. The first from the 1970s era and second from the mid 1980s to early 1990s era. No moustache though.

I think it’s interesting how you can often tell someone is French Canadian, before they open their mouth, simply based on the style of glasses they wear

The French in Europe also have a very distinct style when it comes to their eyewear, and that I quite like.

The Montreal guy looks much cooler than New Brisavoine’s example. Maybe that’s just too Anglo of me though…

NB is still too cool to comment on Carney’s French.

Oh and fixed that for you

Both look cool. NB just lacks the cultural experience and context to understand the Anglo-Saxon one.

Attraction to ugly people is a certain genre. There's always been some attracted to ugly people. In French we call ugly women "laiderons". Historically there's always been some men physically attracted to laiderons.

This is a special meme. (laideron, despite being reserved for women, is masculine by the way, so it's "le"/"un")

True but that’s not what is at play here. It’s a vibe that evokes a certain kind of nostalgic masculinity. It is ironic and cool. It is not ugly.

Interesting. The French aristocracy really were bored. Marquis de Sade the most famous example.

Carney and Poilievre were both invited to Tout le monde en parle last night. I honestly had no idea, so I missed it. Will try to watch it today though. I heard Carney's French was not bad. I wonder what's Acajack take on this. Is he back from his forced vacation yet?
