Lets talk about GDP per Capita
Using IMF 2025 numbers.....
Ireland - $107,243
United States - $89,678
Australia - $67,979
Germany - $57,914
Canada - $55,890
Israel - $54,370
United Kingdom - $54,280
France - $49,527
New Zeeland - $48,234
Spain - $37,362
Japan - $35,611
Poland - $25,040
Mexico - $13,630
Canada GDP output is on par with many western countries. The idea that Canada is becoming a third world country is off base.
Some countries like Ireland and Poland are on fire when it comes to per-capita growth. While we should admire Ireland, Poland is advancing quickly but has a long way to go.
So when Mark Carney gets in he is promising to focus on economic growth and realignment trade channels away from the US. All good stuff.
Is per-capita GDP growth going up? I think that is hard to predict. Not due to anything that Canada does but what Trump is causing. We are going to have a harder time than the Europeans, we are just far more exposed to the US economy.
The issue is who is the best option. I think it is one who is focused on growing the economy, and has experience running an investment firm that has owned railways, energy projects and pipelines. Understands what is needed to make investment decisions because, well he had to make those decisions. Has the reputation and connections to attract foreign capital into Canada to do some of the projects we need.
