An automobile industry could be resurrected in Canada if the tariff war goes badly. It will require massive federal coordination and interprovincial cooperation, but, if Korea and Germany can have important home grown automobile industries, there is no reason why we can not do this in Canada too.
I think the retooling and building markets will take several years.

Some of it is inescapable, to be fair. If the Prime Minister is making a statement about a conversation with the US president, that's going to be prioritized over the leader of the Opposition announcing a policy proposal - regardless of which party is in power.

I agree that this election is still too close to call, especially given that we're only days into the campaign. Polls flipped dramatically due to the Trump factor and they can easily move again. However, I'd suggest that Carney indicated the need for the President to meet with Canada's Prime Minister after the election, regardless of who that might be. As others have noted, his press release did indicate that he would be "working hard" to try to be that person.

Not that I was going to support Mr Poilievre anyway, but I am surprised and disappointed that someone in a position to potentially lead the country is so obviously struggling to pivot to the issue at hand. Part of being the Prime Minister is being able to quickly adapt to changing situations and, so far, Poilievre is not doing well in that respect.

One of the reasons I decided to vote for Carney and the Liberals, is Poilievre's talk of getting rid of the CBC. The CBC is a national institution, and has been used to promote Canadian culture, artists, shows, music, etc. for a century. The CBC is more important now, with all these far-right media outlets starting up. From what I hear, he is also going to prop up independent media like Rebel News.

IMHO, Canada should limit the sale of Canadian local newspapers or television to foreign entities. Postmedia is horrible and bias. Some columnists (Rick Bell, etc) have their face planted so far up America's —, that it is embarrassing. I honestly think that Postmedia should be forced to sell off all Canadian media they acquired, since the company is owned by people who are very close to Trump, an enemy of Canada.

Rebel News, True North, Western Standard, Post Millennial, etc. all have the best interests of the United States, not Canada. There should be a bill introduced to sell all of these media outlets to Canadian companies, or at the very least, prevent them from running political commentary, since a significant amount of Canadian media is owned by an enemy of Canada.

Conservatives fear 'dysfunctional' campaign and 'civil war' in the party: sources

One Conservative suggested the tension — not only between Teneycke and Byrne but also between the Ontario and federal Conservative leaders — amounts to a "civil war" within the Conservative movement. Yet another source said the campaign has a "weird fixation" with relatively minor issues, like how the media is reporting Poilievre's rally crowd sizes. This Conservative said this should not be a concern for senior leaders like Byrne, given other issues they are grappling with.

This source said the priority should be on crafting a better strategy to blunt the Liberal momentum. But the source wasn't hopeful that would actually happen. "There won't be a shift because the people who run this campaign don't want to shift," this person said, referring to both Byrne and Poilievre.

What is likely to happen, this source said, is some sort of "counteroffensive" against Carney, with "persistent attacks" to try and sully the Liberal leader's reputation and drive down his favourability ratings.

I don't think the Canadian public would stand for a negative and disparaging advertising campaign right now,

They want a Captain Canada to point the way to a better future.

Muck raking will be the death knell for the Conservative election campaign.

PP deserves to lose. He is tone deaf, deals only in negative characterizations of others, and is an acolyte of MAGA Republican style electioneering imported from the south of the border.

I'll be surprised if it goes Liberal this time.
My apologies. I totally forgot about Vancouver East. It is probably the closest to safe in all of Canada. So three almost safe seats.

The problem for the NDP is the old labor/union base has eroded, while middle class progressives vacillate between the Liberals and NDP. It's really hard to find a "natural" NDP constituency. Polling data says they do best among the young and people with lower incomes, but they don't have a plurality of any demographic. That doesn't bid well a first past the post, winner take all system.

You're right that negative attack ads won't be effective right now. The CPC has been very negative under PP and seem to be only catering to their base of voters rather than the electorate as a whole. As I've mentioned countless times, what actual solutions has PP offered? He has proven that he can't handle change and has no original ideas. Not exactly strong leadership.

His campaign team is also a disaster as I had predicted would happen. It really bothers me that there is still a significant segment of our population who don't seem to care what PP and the CPC do but hopefully they are just concentrated in areas that already voted CPC. One thing I've noticed lately is that the CPC isn't really using the "Common-Sense" line anymore. I think it got associated too much with Trump.

Those trains are likely going loaded westbound, as there aren't that many cars we make that Europe wants. And I don't know if turning our industry on its head to produce what other countries want will work because our consumers likely won't want those either. It's going to be a pretty sad choice of vehicles to buy in Canada if the only affordable ones are what we build here. Toyota Rav4, Lexus NX and RX, Honda Civic and CRV, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Challenger and Charger, Chevy Silverado. Those plants produce well in excess of what Canadians actually purchase in total number of vehicles a year, so even if every new car sold in Canada was one of those models, the companies would have a glut of capacity and I doubt Europe really wants these particular vehicles.

I think Poilievre's messaging on the CBC over the past two years is stabbing him in the back.

I agree with him, in a sense, that CBC executives are being over paid like crazy. The CBC has absolutely been mismanaging government funds for personal gains of executives. I also feel that some of the CBC content is... questionable. Nonetheless, they do produce good content and are vital to smaller communities.

Poilievre's messaging should've been "Reboot the CBC" instead of "Defund the CBC".

I think he's just playing defense now, trying to hold on to the support he has and hoping the Liberals mess up or the NDP somehow manages to siphon some support back from the Liberals. The Conservatives don't really have any votes to steal, it's a game of holding on and getting your voters to actually get off their — and vote (a problem the Liberals will likely have too)

At the same time, Herr Adolf Drumpf and his annexation talk has quite literally made his new opponent (Carney) into Captain Canada.
And yet, the most prominent ad coming from the Conservatives, many weeks after Trudeau announced his resignation, and even after Carney became PM, was "Carbon Tax Carney: He's just like Trudeau."

Whomever made the decision to keep that ad (complete with blood red saturation) did a lot of harm to PP. Talk about an own goal.

The CBC is one of those environments where I imagine DEI may have gone too far. Diversity is important but I hope they’re also prioritizing content that attracts enough eyeballs to make money.

My solution for CBC wouldn't even be financial. It would just be adding more diversity initiatives into the mix. Political ideology for instance.

It already has an in-house tool (Vote Compass) which could be used in the interview process.

"Alright time for the Anarcho-Capitalist program" [CBC Radio implodes]

While I think we can all show some sympathy for PP. So close but yet so far away. Its time to focus on future. His party is off its rockers.

The latest attach ads from the conservatives are targeting a multi-national insurance company based in Bermuda that Brookfield acquired four years ago and how it has declined some claims from coal mine workers in the US.

Apparently they are also upset Brookfield purchased a coal generating plant from TransAlta in Washington state and owns coal interests in Australia.

While at the same time the Conservatives are advocating for fossil fuel expansion in Canada and reducing regulations.

We need a just transition away from coal, oil and gas to cleaner assets. However we need to realise that transition is going to take a generation and until then we will still need some oil and gas.

So now the Conservatives are trying to point themselves as the environmentalists and champions of worker rights and protection. No one is buying it.

At this point in time, it's foolish to be saying anything negative about DEI, with the direction the United States in going in.

DEI is essentially equal rights. For minorities, woman, — orientation, religious preference, etc. One of the benefits of living in Cnada, is compared to our southern neighbours, we have much less racism, or discrimination.

The Trump Administration has eliminated DEI and civil rights in a matter of weeks. It looks decades for minority groups to fight for civil rights. Many were murdered in the struggle. In America, it is not illegal to fire someone for being Black, Muslim, female, or homosexual, or people with disabilities.

For better or for worse, we must protect Canadian civil rights.
