He represents the Liberal part, so of course it’ll be a positive no matter what.

If Poilievre even had a discussion with Trump and Trump gave the same response, the spin would be completely opposite. Pretty sure this entire forum would agree… i.e see the Daniel Smith bashing when she went to the US to speak with US representatives to fight for AB’s best interest.

It definitely would be spun that way if a Con had the conversation.. i interpret this as a leader of one country working with the leader of another country to hash out details in these dire times, it just so happens it’s during an election.

Trump and Carney have a 'productive call'

He loves Putin too. What do you think about that?
Oh yeah, almost forgot, you're on record as a Putin supporter.

Feel like some of the public messaging doesn't exactly match the private messaging.

We are moving away to become closer or becoming closer to move away or having new agreements to be more distanced or...?

Trump saying that he had a very productive phone call (that he initiated) with the Prime Minister of Canada, in a respectful statement with no 51st state BS, no Governor BS is an absolute death blow to Poilievre....turn off the lights.

He could have so easily emasculated him and shown Canadians that he would treat Carney the way he did Trudeau, but instead he showed respect to him....its a clear demonstration that Carney is the right guy to deal with him....voters no longer have to speculate...its been shown right in the middle of a campaign.

This statement was the best....

"We will be meeting immediately after Canada's upcoming election to work on elements of politics, business and other factors,"

Why would he be setting up a meeting with the leader of the opposition....Pierre must be waiving his angry little fist in the air.

We are lucky there is an opportunity for a reset here. Trump is driven by personal considerations and narcissism. He sometimes holds grudges (like with Zelensky) and he doesn't like to admit when he was wrong (which happens frequently). There is a chance Trump will like Carney more than Trudeau and if Trump regrets some unworkable trade policy decisions due to domestic fallout he can undo them and blame Trudeau now.

I think the US should be doing "friend-shoring"; Canada and Mexico should both be completely inside the friend circle basically no matter what. Europe, Oceania, and the democratic Asian countries should be there for the most part as well but should be punished in some cases, like if they are too friendly with Russia or China.

Ever hear of walking softly and carrying a big stick?

Ask Teddy Roosevelt.

There is nothing incongruous really about being assertive and negotiating in good faith at the same time.

I've read someone say that Mark Carney's subtle olive branch to Donald Trump has "only Nixon could go to China" vibes.

Definitely out of touch with the majority of Albertans. This could even cost the CPC a seat or two here I think.

For relations with China, Carney would definitely be the guy...

Carney could unravel all the damage JT did!

US, China, India. JT left a huge steaming POS in his wake.

The Liberals have made the entire election into who is stronger at "The Resistance" though. This just lays it bare that it is largely political rhetoric.

In case you were unaware of the reference.

Carney has been quite critical of China and signalled he does not intend to expand our trade relations with China, and that the focus is Europe and our more liked minded countries in Asia.

I don't know if you can draw too many conclusions from that. If we are engaged in negotiations with China, he's going to want to give the impression that he would happily walk away at any point regardless of whether he wants a deal or is cool to deal.

I guess it's hard to say how much JT should be blamed for these issues. He didn't create them and there were bad actors on the other side in all cases. However, it seems the outcomes might have been better had the handling been better on the Canada side, and there is nothing unreasonable about setting high standards of competence for the PM.

Shouldn't JT have had some sort of rapport with Trump due to being around during Trump's first term? It goes to show you how you should be very careful about foreign politicians as you never know who will reappear and in what capacity. This is a bit dangerous for Canada as Canadians sometimes get involved in American partisanship. It is poisonous for Canadian politicians to pretend they are Democrats.

The Meng Wanzhou affair was almost entirely Trump's fault, for ripping up Obama's nuclear deal with Iran. She was arrested in Vancouver, because a subsidiary of Huawei was accused of doing business in Iran.

That being said, Trump surely isn't solely to blame for the deterioration of Canada-China relations... JT was seen as weaker than Harper, and China become increasingly nationalistic and aggressive in the middle of JT's first term.

I don't think China will see Mark Carney the same way they saw Justin Trudeau.

JT had some disastrous habits on foreign policy.

1) From day 1 he would counter program Trump and try to contrast himself with what was going on in the US. This was absolutely unnecessary. Remember his tweets about how everybody was welcome here? The guy couldn't help himself.

2) Zero understanding of the value of hard power. Even after Ukraine. To be fair there's some on this forum who share that ignorance.

3) Ignored domestic issues that quickly became international issues. Like money laundering, organized crime, etc.

I honestly don't get the sense that Carney would do or tolerate any of the above at all. Not just personality. But experience. Being the banker to a P5 country with nukes brings a whole different perspective on how grown up countries. Even when facing major issues (Brexit).

Did money laundering really get much worse under JT than Harper? Correct me if I'm wrong, but corrupt money from around the world has been funnelling into Canada for decades... especially in the housing market.

Trump is able to play both good cop and bad cop. The thing not to miss here is that Trump likes a strong winner, despises "losers" bigly, so if Carney gets an overwhelming electoral majority, and high approval ratings, that will impress him.
