I bet you some guy hung the first one and realized he miscalculated the wire lengths completely, tried again and it was even worse....so he decided to take some artistic license with the hanging process :-)

They were originally hung with just 2 cables each, but the lights would sway and smash in the wind, so they added the angled cables to each corner with the little clips and turnbuckles to stabilize them.

I'll have to look at Hurdman again, but the lights there, being more sheltered, don't have the extra cable hangs AFAIK



They did add them at Tremblay, though not shown in this older photo




Limebank is the only Stage 2 staton that I know of that uses that same style of hanging light fixture, but they didn't feel as whimsical there, I think they are bolted at each end

I hope I'm posting this in the right place. I find the Rideau Station rather confusing so I made a 3D sketch to help find my way around. I could add some labels, but other than that, any comments?

Nice sketch! FYI if you are having a hard time with any other station layouts, there are station maps posted at most display boards throughout O-Train/Transitway stations. You can also find all station maps here by selecting a station name and scrolling to "station map".

The only thing I'd say you're missing is the 4 sets of escalators to the surface at the Byward market end

This is really well done! It also highlights some of the short fallings in design. Not having the concourse level connected, so people have to figure out which way to go at the platform level always makes me shake my head. It is evident during summer tourist season how short sighted building it this way was.

Make it a tourist attraction – put in a couple of wobbly suspension bridges between the two concourse areas.

There should just be larger, clearer signs between the two stairways, "ByWard Market / William Street" one direction and "Rideau Centre / Sussex Drive" on the other. The existing signs are tiny and generic, plus they are separate and spaced apart so it's hard to relate the alternate direction. Maybe they need something artistic like a photo or graphic mural that visually ties to the destinations in each direction, to highlight the importance of choosing which escalator/stair to take at platform level.

That is really something that you notice other places, in particular cities like Paris and New York. There is lots of large, simple, clear signage that makes it easy to find your way. It would take very little to improve our signage - just copy the people that do it well.

I don't understand why there isn't a Mezzanine level at Rideau of all stations. Pretty drastic difference between the two exits.

I think it was done entirely for aesthetics. They wanted the big cavernous opening, didn't Watson keep going on about how Rideau was going to be such a dramatic and special station?

In the grand scheme of things though it's not uncommon. All the underground crosstown stations in Toronto will have that same two mezzanine setup that Rideau has.

It's closed all the time, permanently. That happened a while ago.

To be honest, it never got much traffic. The one at Blair does better, not sure about Tunney's
To be honest though, I think it's a poor location. Rideau doesn't cater as much to the office crowd getting off and heading to work. It's more shoppers and tourists, why get a coffee in a tunnel when there's more pleasant options on the surface.

I think Parliament would have been a better choice, there's always a huge morning rush at the Starbucks just upstairs in the Sunlife center, and it's all people heading to their desks, not looking to sip and savour while shopping or exploring

My perception of how slow Line 1 and 2 is confirmed with a comparison chart appearing on urban Toronto website. Line 1 and 2 are by far the slowest and the southeast Transitway is by far the fastest. It compares similar rail lines in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
