Given the likely increase in non-US travel this summer, I wonder if they'd bring back YOW/YUL-YHZ to try and get some connection on their TATL routes out of YHZ.

Ah yes I forgot about that and the dates align as I believe 28MAY31 is the last day for ops for WG as an airline. Here are some minor AC transborder reductions out of YVR from https://www.aeroroutes.com/eng/250319-ac3q25yvr:

Vancouver – Houston 01JUL25 – 31AUG25 Reduce from 7 to 6 weekly
Vancouver – Washington Dulles 01JUL25 – 31AUG25 Reduce from 7 to 5 weekly

Previously reported, AC is reducing Vancouver – Miami service from 4 to 3 weekly, from 11JUL25 to 31AUG25.

Thanks for the update, Vancouver YVR will do just fine in S25!

Also looks like South Korea’s T’Way Air getting closer to starting up the Vancouver YVR - Seoul ICN - YVR flight ✈️ route, as they’re hiring for T’Way Airline staff for its Vancouver base in Richmond BC , Canada✅. https://ca.indeed.com/viewjob?jk=158b193f5fd5dbe8

AC/UA consolidating their transborder ops.

UA is reducing IAD-YOW/YUL, and cancelling their plan to launch YYZ-LAX.

https://x.com/IshrionA/status/1902872952216965569

Apparently AC has removed IAD-YVR from the schedules as well, UA will keep operating the route on a seasonal basis.

This is just the start. I expect more cuts in the coming months.

Extremely good numbers, especially considering Feb 2025 had 1 less day than Feb 2024, but again, it doesn't really illustrate what is happening overall across the country, especially when it comes to transborder travel.

Seriously? Have we learned nothing?

WestJet considers hiring temporary foreign workers to solve pilot shortage
Union says company should address issues without looking outside Canadian labour market
Paula Duhatschek · CBC News · Posted: Mar 21, 2025

Calgary-based WestJet is considering whether to use temporary foreign workers (TFWs) to fly its planes.

In a statement, spokesperson Julia Kaiser told CBC News the airline is exploring the labour market impact assessment (LMIA) process as one of "multiple avenues" to meet a shortage of WestJet Encore captains.

The LMIA is essentially a piece of paperwork that a business needs to take part in the federal TFW program, to prove that there are no local workers available to take a job.

The union representing pilots at the airline says it wasn't consulted by either the WestJet or the federal government about the move.

"This application should never have been made," said Capt. Tim Perry, president of the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) Canada....

Yeah both YEG & YOW were pretty good numbers and I’d forgotten about it being compared to a leap year, which knocks about 1.5% off the growth rate. .

For UA, the YOW-IAD is a cancellation of the 4th daily that had just been loaded a couple of months ago. YOW-EWR is also being cut from 3x to 2x temporarily from the end of March until early May.

Kinda surprised that YYC-IAD survived the UA cuts. Unless they truly intend on keeping it until WS backs off? 10x weekly seems kind of excessive on that route.

It does look like WS is backing off YYC-LGA though.

I wonder if WS’s YYC IAD might get cut. It’s not even daily and I wonder how good the bookings are looking for it this summer.

Some PD transborder reductions for PD out of YOW this summer:
- BOS reduced from 2x daily to 10x weekly; and
- FLL, which got extended to year-round daily will now be 6x weekly.

It actually has better advance bookings than last year, so I don’t foresee WS dropping it yet. They may shorten the season though.

WS did cut the following in this weekends update:
YYC-LGA
YEG-MCO (Suspended for S25)
YEG-YUL
YWG-YUL

YEG/YWG-YUL were announced to great fanfare and now get cut before even getting going.

YWG-YOW was also reduced from daily to 4-5x weekly for the summer.

Gotta love airfare in Canada. Booking a flight to Kelowna from YEG this week.

Direct flight all in is $1625.28.

Flight is 1hr 20mins.

I would expect to see it continue. Some of those January pax people had already booked and paid, but for the upcoming months, especially in the summer, I'm expecting some hefty drops.

I'm curious to see how much YYC gets affected? I'm wondering if WS drops transborder from some other cities, but keeps YYC flights open to funnel through some of the traffic from other cities?

^ Pretty late announcement. I think they’re scrambling to add service to Europe in the wake of lower demand to the US. Gotta send those 737’s somewhere.

Indeed. I'm waiting for WestJet services from YHZ to Madrid, Lisbon and Madeira too.

Heck, maybe they might even throw in a flight from YQM to Paris as well.........

Now when do they bring back daily YOW/YUL-YHZ flights to feed all these YHZ Euro routes? It seems odd that they wouldn't add feed to support all of this.

Maybe they don't need the feed. Maybe they're looking at all the people in the Maritimes that would normally need to travel to YYZ or YUL and backtrack to get to Europe and now they have the option not to. Or maybe it will spur people to take that trip to Spain knowing they won't need to waste time backtracking.

Like I said recently, I believe WestJet could provide their own little niche of a hub at YHZ. Remember, since WS has vacated YYZ and YUL so to speak, they aren't cannibalizing any flights from those airports like AC would be doing by providing a YHZ-BCN route. WS should throw MAX 8's only out east to build up the reputation although that means more garbage Swoop planes for us out at YEG.
