Oshtemo Township -
KPS will soon begin construction on its new central kitchen facility (the groundbreaking, originally scheduled for December 5, was cancelled due to weather). The estimated $8.5 million, ~ 17,000 SF project is funded through the 2018 public school bond, and it will be constructed on the site of the former Chime Elementary School, which was demolished earlier this year (
6750 Chime Street). The project was delayed due to pandemic-related supply chain issues and challenges in acquiring a site. Construction is expected to wrap up in early in 2026. From the district's
Facebook announcement, the new facility -

The district provides approximately 6,500 breakfasts, 9,000 lunches, 400 dinners, and afternoon snacks for students each day. In addition, the district provides meals to Head Start, KRESA, and other area organizations. The new facility will replace the district's main kitchen at the Community Education Center.
The new kitchen is part of a strategy to provide fresher, higher-quality, and more consistent food options for students. The new facility has more food preparation space and enhanced cooler and freezer storage to allow the district to take advantage of commodity shipments and strengthen its purchasing procedures, which will result in cost savings and reduced food waste...
