The Canadian approach has generally been to remove barriers that would discriminate against minorities or disadvantages groups being hired. I think that is solid policy both in the private and public sector. Give everyone a fair and equal chance.
Canada does not really have hiring quotas in the same sense as the US did.
The metrics where you measure the number of group is how you determine if your making progress. If your making progress over time with a large enough sample size you should see something that is more reflective of the population as a whole.
What I think got some right leaning folks in arms is seeing Canadian corporations actively court the gay community by participating in parades or flying flags. Or seeing banks recognize black history months or the like. Well in 2025 and by all means corporations should be free to recognize the communities they serve. Now is not the time to go backwards on any of that.
