Europe is facing a pretty big threat on their own, there is no way they are emptying their military arsenals to help Canada in a war with the USA.

They would almost certainly help us with intelligence, financial aid, and weapons just like they have with Ukraine.

Right now, Europe's greatest threat is the rise of the far right in some countries. It is certainly not Russia, as the Ukraine army has decimated the military, and left 800,000 Russians as casualties of war.

I would not count on that. I don't think they would do any of those things actually. Jean-Luc Mélenchon (a French opposition leader) even suggested recently that the US should not have Quebec. Implying that there's probably not much they would do if the US wanted to annex Canada, but at least, they should "leave Quebec alone". I suspect we would eventually find out that no one will want to be involved in this shitstorm.

I am sympathetic to this view, but on the other hand as we know it is perfectly legal and acceptable in a liberal democracy such as ours to democratically seek and advocate for a change to the political status of the country or parts of it.

The right to dissent is one of the rights we have as Canadians.

It even applies when applying it kinda sucks.

I am not saying they dont have the right, I am just saying that they have the opportunity to move to the U.S. now. They could have moved there 6 months ago before Trump started to fantasize about annexation. If they were really serious about the whole thing, they would have move there already instead of waiting that the U.S. move here.

It is not always so easy to secure US residency depending on one's career.

I know some people who really do love Trump and want to move to the US (specifically Texas) and...uh...let's just say that they don't have the kinds of skills and experience that any other country that wants to run a modern economy really needs.

It's all but guaranteed that if the US ever attacked Canada, it would destroy America as we know it. Guerrilla warfare, suicide bombings, and drone attacks against strategic American targets would be the norm. It would also turn ethnic Canadians living in the United States, viewed as "enemies of the state," and subject to persecution.

It would certainly spill into US territory, due to the largest land border in the World. It would be worse than the Ukraine War, which had bled Russia of it's economy, and military strength. We would certainly get intelligence and aid from most European allies, and others.

One would be surprised how quickly young people would stop entertaining the idea of joining the US, when faced with a very real threat of annexation. In fact, it's already happening. Young people, who are naturally more susceptible to enemy propaganda (Twitter, Sun News, National Post, Rebel News, True North, etc.), have seen the light, and have become patriotic for the first time ever. Trump's threats are uniting the country, and probably doing more to divide an already fractured America.

It's exactly what happened in Ukraine nearly 15 years ago. Many Ukrainians. especially in the eastern Provinces, entertained the thought of joining Russia or at least breaking off from the Ukraine, only to come to their senses, once Russia marched into the country, and annexed the Crimea. Trump is emulating Putin, and it will not end well for him, or the USA.
I still have a hard time imagining people who won't even change the TV channel on their remote in the name of Canadian identity, taking up arms (assuming they can find enough of them) to face down the most powerful military in the history of humanity.

I mean, I'd like to think we have that kind of resolve, but it just doesn't add up in my mind.

That's true of all countries, even those with a supposedly strong indigenous culture. Hitler's war machine would never have lasted as long as it did if it weren't for millions of very compliant Vichy French.

Paradoxically, I think Canadians would lift more of a finger because, unlike France, a lot of our identity derives from being not-American, rather than an essential Canadian-ness.

You could be French and a fascist, but you can't really be a Canadian and an American.

^ our collective resolve hasn't been tested in 86 years. Who is to say how it would go if it ever came down to an armed conflict with the US? Canada has always risen to the occasion when it's necessary.

But i can't imagine the US wants to annex a country in ruins, so warfare would make absolutely zero sense for anyone.

Canada has assisted Europe militarily for over 100 years including:

-battles in WW1
-battles in WW2
-stationing troops during the Cold War to counter Russian aggression
-peacekeeping in areas of conflict (I.e Cyprus and Yugoslavia)

Ukraine has done none of this. You really think Europeans are going to send hundreds of billions to Ukraine, a country that historically did nothing for the continent, but will tell Canada essentially that we are on our own?

BTW, your suggestion that in the event of an American invasion, they would leave Quebec alone was hilarious. Thanks for the laugh.

It's not the war/invasion that will hurt the US. American would likely defeat Canada in less than 2 weeks. It's the occupation that would bleed America dry.

The United States has a horrible history of occupying nations. It's so bad that an insurgency is bound to happen. As I said before, it's bad enough when insurgents resort to Guerrilla warfare halfway around the globe. When its within 100 km of the US border, it will hit very close to home.

Let's face it. Any American occupation would last 5 years tops, until either they pull out completely, after their economy collapses, or in a worse case scenario, the insurgency spreads to the United States, where groups opposed to Trump join forces with Canadian rebels, and start a civil war, ending with the Trump administration being overthrown.

It's not Le Calmar is who is talking about the Americans leaving Quebec alone, it's Jean-Luc Mélenchon who is the leader of La France Insoumise, a French lefist (borderline far left) opposition party.

I am not ruling out the possibility of an insurgency or resistance. It's true that it doesn't take that many people to cause a whole lot of trouble.

I agree with all this.

We would lose any war with the US in short order. The occupation is what will kill them. Even a resistance of only 25,000 people (out of 41M) could cause a lot of mayhem for occupying troops, and, there would be the opportunity to move the theatre into the US as well. Canadians are virtually indistinguishable from Americans, and, I have no doubt a domestic US insurgency could arise, especially given how repulsive and ideological President Palpatine is. I could see a lot of civil conflict in the US following the invasion of Canada,

That's not what I said at all.

Edit to clarify: Jean-Luc Mélenchon is hoping that the US would leave Quebec alone.

It’s really hard, actually. Easier to wait and get citizenship when Trump annexes

They can move to Texas anytime by crossing the porous Can-USA border illegally, and they’ll easily get a job picking fruit in the lower Rio Grande Valley

(They might need to be fluent in Spanish… only other skill needed than a pulse)
