We only need protection from the US. The threat from the US is real and palpable. The threat from Russia and China is still somewhat theoretical, quite distant and not really imminent.

Canada's problem is that we are a small country with lots of lands and resources. Now that the old world order is dead, the international conventions that protected us are gone. We are now at the mercy of aggressor states. There is only one aggressor state ready to invade us at a moments notice, and it is not Russia or China.

At least to me, there is a notable difference between calling people out directly by name and making a general statement that could apply to any number of people (they are free to decide if it applies to them).

But again, that's just my personal impression.

I’d agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.

More crazy fanfiction. It would not be anything like Vietnam or the Middle East wars.

Those were developing countries where the people were already use to incredible hardship/under educated and/or religious fanatics.

Also imagine trying to pull off guerrilla warfare on the vast majority Canada's terrain.

Incredible stupid and cringe takes going on. War with the US would utterly destroy this country.

But then again I'm not the coward, who deleted posts, lost evidence, closed a thread and also wields the banning hammer. Whoever that person might be.

That wasn't what I meant. I meant the situation back home in the US. But I'm curious, how would it destroy the country without destroying the infrastructure they'd want.

Saying we are a small country is self deprecating and a bit insulting to be honest. Our problem is, we are dwarfed by the huge gorilla in the world to the south of us, and we've based a lot of our culture and economy based on serving said gorilla.

Despite or because of that, we're still the 9th largest country by GDP on the planet, pulling in 1/10th of the US's GDP. Considering our population is 1/10th the US's size that's pretty respectible IMO.

Population wise, we're around 37th in the world, which is still in the top 20% of countries as well.

Sure we could do better, and we should diversify more and stand up more. But compared to most other countries, we're a solid middle country with the connections and reputations that give us significant global reach (even now).

Sure we are smaller compared to many of the other countries we look to. But they are truly giants on the world stage, especially our neighbour to the south. That we can legitimately look at them and say "We're in their league, or close to it" puts us so far above the "small" level, it's laughable.

It's also important to remember that the Vietnam War was not just the invasion of another country by the US but an internal civil war between the Vietnamese that the Americans took sides in.

I have no idea how Canadians would react to an invasion or how many Canadians would side with the American invaders, but it's probably not realistic to expect 100% of Canadians to want to fight them.

And surely a decently large segment of the population would be blasé or fatalistic about the whole thing and therefore not interested in fighting back.

It's not mentioned often but in the Ukraine-Russia war there have been people who are technically Ukrainian nationals fighting alongside Russian troops against the Ukrainian army, especially from ethnically Russian regions in the Donbass (east).

With all the talk about election interference, how concerned are we about the US meddling now? Musk is already all over this, I'm sure Trump will be soon too, once he realizes we are joining their country.

The thread was attracting complaints. Several mods suggested closing the thread, before I went and took action. There were suggestions for harsher measures, which haven't been taken. It might surprise you, but there is almost always a discussion before action is taken.

Perhaps you aren't aware of several patterns, going back many months and years, that have not escaped the attention of the mods. You don't have to agree with our actions. There is often disagreement in these threads about how the mods handle things.

I don't feel that our actions are cowardly at all, but it is not my job to convince you otherwise. Cowardly is standing by and doing nothing. I will say that we won't tolerate any undermining of our authority, such as it is. Whether you or anyone else likes it or not.

To be clear, ad hominem attacks will be countered with warnings, and for repeat offenders, suspension and banning. If you have a personal beef, then I suggest sending a PM.

It is fiction and will never happen for one key reason.

There is no reason to believe this would not spill over onto US soil. Modern American has no experience with war on its soil. Sept 11 was the closest and the response was a state of shock.

There are a number of US cities close to the Canadian border.

This president may do everything up to and short of an invasion but that is not a line he would cross.

Given our military...and probably even more importantly our civilian gun policies...imagine thinking there would be a serious reaction.

From who, with what?

You're just making up scenarios now.

Can we put this discussion in a fantasy thread somewhere?
