the Nazi's had policies that put Canada first? I don't think this joke is as funny as you believe it to be.

It's amazing that elly brought up Canadians (like my grandfathers) risking everything to fight the Nazis, meanwhile Musk's grandparents were Nazi sympathizers that moved from Canada with purpose to Apartheid South Africa because they believed in subjugation and segregation of Blacks. His parents were aghast when Apartheid was overthrown.

Quote:
Elon Musk's father, Errol, has a rather different version of events: "My ex-wife's parents came to South Africa from Canada because they sympathised with the Afrikaner government. In fact, they were very fanatical about apartheid,"
Quote:
Musk's father pointed out that the grandfather supported Nazi Germany: "They used to support Hitler.

The really unfortunate thing about the way so many people debate these days is that the hyperbole is so extreme that I find myself defending public figures that I don't really care for.

I was never really a fan of Elon Musk or Donald Trump, long before they were ever close to getting involved in politics.

I do recall however that many many people who spend their days spewing venom about them today used to have a big hard-on for them back in the day.

This is especially true of Musk and in his case you don't even have to go back that far in time to when he was a huge progressive hero for mainstreaming the electric vehicle.

If I was a Jewish person or Israel itself, I wonder who I'd take my chances with: the selective outrage crowd or Musk?
I think the main contention is that the entire MAGA movement and Donald Trump himself are neo-fascists. I think this is now incontrovertible, given their actions. Whether or not Musk's gesture was a Nazi salute is beside the point. Musk has decided to go all in with the American neo-fascists in any event. This in itself is abhorrent.

Donald Trump has revealed himself to be an imperialist dictator like Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin. I seriously doubt there will be a fair election in 2028. Something will happen in the States guaranteeing perpetual Republican control. We will have to get used to living next to a fascist state.

China has Taiwan. Russia has Ukraine. The US has Canada. We are to be their punching bag. The only question is whether Canada will only suffer economic warfare or full on military invasion. I am not ruling out the latter. After all, with climate change, the US will need lebensraum. I fear an Anschluss is coming.

The post WW2 world order is well and truly dead.

Couldn't agree more. If you're one bit out of lock step with the authoritarians, you're out and the next thing you know people are calling you a Conservative.

I would post my actual feelings about what is going on here if some of these people were actually mature enough to have that conversation. And part of that includes an anger that it took until now for Trudeau to finally grow a spine and do what is right for all Canadians. Why couldn't he have governed like a real Liberal, hell I even like what Joly is showing now.

It is just easier not to invest energy in defending the indefensible.

Donald Trump and Elon Musk fall into that category of people that don't need defending. Their actions speak for themselves.

The really unfortunate thing about the way so many people debate these days is that they display apathy for issues that are really important to many if not most people. Yet they rush to provide cover for those individuals that are attacking those things that are so important.

Trump is an existential threat to Canada. That is bound to make a lot of people upset.

He is definitely an existential threat to Canada. I have never disputed that. To what degree is still hard to figure out because it's difficult to separate the bluster from true intentions with this guy. But clearly the biggest external threat to Canada in the lifetime of anyone alive today.

I just don't think it's helpful to engage in extreme hyperbole as if he has devil horns hidden in that mass of puffy orange hair. It's counterproductive.

Perhaps to some it is psychologically therapeutic.

To me it just comes off as insane.

And of course it just emboldens him and his supporters.

BTW I also think it's borderline insane to always agree with a politician or a political party on every single thing. Even if you are a member of a party if you have a mind of your you can't not disagree on certain things that you keep your mouth shut about.

As such it's disturbing how on SSP and out there in society there are so many people who blindly agree or disagree with every single thing depending on the party colours of the person saying it.

This is not normal, folks.

Obviously peoples' opinions can change when the behaviour of these public figures changes so dramatically. Is that supposed to be some kind of gotcha?

At this rate, I do think that the upcoming federal election will indicate how divided Canada has become.
I’ll be curious whether any party wins Ontario soundly or whether it’s neck-to-neck in Ontario.
Ps: It’ll be interesting if we have to count the last ballots in B.C. to be able to declare a winner.

Sounds a lot like someone I know, with respect to Trump and Trudeau, respectively.

I want a steady hand during these trying times. One that will preserve:

- false economies and real estate ponzis
- carbon schemes
- clown world energy policies
- post-post national state (we're patriotic again)

Also before mods do something stupid this is my second ever account(first was 'goodgrowth')

I'm curious to know who thinks the US would have an actual incursion into Canada and if so what would be the response, fight or surrender. The way I look at it, it's a ready made Vietnam. They could never chance one guy coming home in a body bag from Canada, the US public wouldn't take it.
