We're all out of waterfront. Either we get CP to stop storing hazmats on the tracks, or we build on the actual water.

Can’t be done quickly enough for FIFA demand.

Science World, Plaza of Nations and Lonsdale Shipyards would be further possibilities for locations

I assume they want good vehicle accessibility for lobby functions. I doubt you can charge the room rates for a "luxury" experience for False Creek versus Canada Place.

Does BC have laws regulating the operation of casinos both on land and on boats?

That's an interesting question. Obviously we get a lot of cruise ship traffic and I'm pretty sure every single one has a massive casino inside. I've never gone on a cruise from Vancouver but I have to assume the casino operates while they're in dock. I find it hard to believe that they're subject to the BCLC but perhaps they are?

They aren't open when they are in dock.

Casinos
Casino operations are to be shut down and deactivated while the ship is in port. Signs must be posted on casino doors indicating that the machines are not operational. A letter requesting permission for casino staff to complete maintenance work inside casinos should be submitted to the FPOA inbox when the ship is in port for the first time each season. This letter, suitably endorsed by the CBSA, will act as permission for casino maintenance work while at port for the entire season.

The Gibraltar boat has a casino.

Yes. Since a 1984 Supreme Court decision, everything from Vancouver island west is considered "inland waters" and this includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, the Strait of Georgia, Johnstone Strait and Queen Charlotte Strait. This means that the Provincial Government has in this space the jurisdiction over things like tourism and recreation and gambling.

Maybe once NEFC and the rest of OV open for business? Marina Bay gets a pretty good tourist draw for much the same setup.

Took a Princess cruise from Seattle to Alaska in 2011 and the casino shut down when we entered Canadian waters on the return (had to cash out). Route was outside Vancouver Island.

PS - this akin to McBarge, but hotel use.

No, you couldn't get anything like that sized vessel to fit under Cambie Bridge. I don't imagine that would be a problem with Lonsdale, but I don't know whether there's a location where a floating hotel could moor semi-permanently.

Floating hotel rezoning application

Quote:
Tidal Energy: The hotel will feature an R&D project to
explore the feasibility of generating power from the
changing tide, with potential high efficiency and low
environmental impact.

Wave Energy: Another area of research and development
will be the use of piezoelectric dampers integrated in the
mooring arrangement of the hotel, to generate energy
from wave movement for use onboard the vessel

Energy Storage: The vessel will utilize onboard liquid
thermal energy storage units (TES) and Li-ion battery
storage for backup systems as a key element of the
energy system.

Zero Discharge: The hotel will not use fossil fuels of any
kind and has no emissions from engines or generators.
All onboard systems will be directly integrated into VCC
infrastructure and there will be no wastewater discharge
to the surrounding harbour.

Looks like four tanks at the back of the boat. They said water isn't that good at retaining energy and takes up too much space so it might be a different technology.
