When does the province take jurisdiction of the Gardiner and DVP? And was the Allen included in the deal with the city of Toronto?

The province will provide funding for the DVP and the Gardiner to the City of Toronto for the remainder of 2024 as well as 2025.

The province is currently undertaking due diligence for both the DVP and Gardiner Expressway. Once that is completed (originally scheduled for the end of 2024), then the province will move forward with uploading.

It seems unlikely to me that either the DVP or the Gardiner will be uploaded to be exactly the same as other 400-series highways in Toronto. I suspect the city will still retain some involvement, but that will be determined once the province finishes its diligence work.

The Allen will remain a city owned facility.

Dusk view of Highway 400 from the Rutherford Road overpass in Vaughan. This was shot in November, 2023 before the widening project started:

Look at all that traffic usefully being diverted from the 401. Thanks again, Harris!

I curse Mike Harris and the conservatives every time I pass through Toronto and use the 407 to bypass the insanity that is the 401. I even pay for a transponder since I make enough trips to S Ontario each year. 99.99% of the time traffic would be considered light and my trips are usually mid afternoon. What an absolute shame.

I've always been of the opinion that travelers passing through Toronto and not to Toronto should get a break on 407 tolls as we're avoiding adding to the chaos on the 401. Probably never happen in my lifetime.

View looking easterly towards Toronto from the Lemonville Road overpass over the 403 between Hamilton and Burlington. The GO Train on the right of the photo is coming from Hamilton and heading to Aldershot Station just to the east of this photo:

That is the single busiest stretch of 6-lane freeway in the province, IIRC.

Really? You'd think the province would at least have street lights for this section of the highway.

There is still 68km, which is fairly substantial, but yes, that's the remaining gap.

There is a small stretch going into Sudbury as well to connect to 17 that needs to be done, but that stretch is already "4 lanes", just not up to freeway standards.

I am interested to see how the completion of the project changes perceptions in Northern Ontario. Getting Sudbury onto the "400 series" network will make it feel a lot more integrated with the rest of the province, I think.

Technically there’s still an undivided 4-lane section from Estaire Road to Highway 17, but that project is probably to be done in conjunction with Highway 17 twinning. (That said, an MTO engineer once told me that the new interchange between 17 & 69 would have to be a project on its own given the geotechnical challenges in that area.)
Otherwise, this 68-km gap, if bridged, will bring the Highway-400 designation to the outskirts of Sudbury.

Edit: @Insertnamehere beats me to it.

Definitely. Impacts on local economies too, for me.

In terms of economic development, I've recalled reading about how upgrade of the final section of 69 has been viewed as important. But I think making Sudbury that much "closer" to the Greater Golden Horseshoe in travel time will not in itself be a boon for many industries, so I hope EcDev folks in the region have other levers they plan to use. I imagine retail will experience positive effects because the market south of Sudbury will become more accessible, but for types of manufacturing (if that's still something the city wants to grow) the access just makes it easier for plants in the GGH to serve the north.

I’m only cautiously optimistic.
4 lanes of Highway 11 have reached North Bay for the past 12 years, yet, is that city really growing??

Well it isn't as big as Sudbury, and it ain't the 411

Isn't 11 up to 400 series standards south of North Bay for a bit? I guess some politician could renumber that 411 if they wanted- I know that goes against official policy but anything could be done.

---

Speaking of new 400 series, seems Douggie could call an election as early as next week. This will be the 413 election. I still don't even know the names of the leaders of Lib and NDP parties too well. They might campaign to stop it, but I think the Bradford Bypass is a go no matter who wins.

The last parts of 11 built are full freeway standards, but there are huge parts of 11 between North Bay and Barrie which are very, very substandard. Getting a 400-series designation for it won't be easy.

I’m very undecided about whom to vote for provincially…
On one hand, I want to vote PC because they’re the only one that can guarantee 417 extension. On the other hand, PC’s been in power for too long…

If highways are your priority you have to vote Ford. I think a second term with a different federal government he will double down on that. Actually start some kind of expansion into Toronto. It might not be a 401 tunnel but a bunch of small projects. For example maybe extend Allen Road south via tunnel. Widen the DVP and add tunnel west along Eglington to link up with Allen. Fully embrace the return to 60s/ Texas style development which certainly has downsides but does deliver affordable access to suburban housing.
