The lot behind Granite Curling club was one of the city-owned lots (the land is not owned by the curling club) that was identified for affordable housing development. There was a list of identified properties in a council meeting a few months ago but I can't find it right now.

I have always wondered why the city leases space for the traffic services truck parking compound on Archibald north of Marion and not develop the old EK public works yard at 545/569 Watt.

Right now there is a public non profit group leasing the former EK police station, Parks has a small warehouse and a mothballed ambulance station all facing Watt St. Behind that there is a large fenced compound that is next to unused.

Each of the big chains has some version of this concept. Hilton has Spark, Starwood/Marriott has Moxy. Alt is basically the same idea.

The idea is typically an urban location, smaller but boldly designed rooms, with bar/lounge spaces integrated with the lobby area, often with some sort of nightlife type programming (e.g. DJ nights) and a grab-and-go convenience store during the day.

Typically no pool, no free parking (and perhaps no onsite parking at all), no room service or full-service restaurant. Even little amenities are skimped on (e.g. often no iron or ironing board). Check-in may be via a tablet or app, so limited front desk staff. Some have alternating-days or by-request housekeeping.

Target market is usually short-stay millennial/gen-z personal travellers. Competes against airbnbs as much as other hotel chains.

Yeah... Aloft hotels (W Hotels offshoot) have a similar vibe. If the city I'm visiting has one, I usually like to stay there. Not too expensive, cool decor... and always a great bar!

Then maybe dump the Beer Can and put up a parking lot there. They can’t have it all.

I think part of the problem is automatically equating "affordable housing " with "public housing" and "tenement" (which has it's own definition, but has come to be associated with poverty and crime). The need for affordable housing is great, so IMO people going to the Granite can find parking a little further away and walk.

I never stayed at the Alt so I couldn't say. Aloft has all the amenities you'd expect from a typical hotel, except for a restaurant and room service—which I never use. Why eat at the hotel restaurant when there are better and cheaper local options nearby? Some hotels have pools. Some have free parking. The bars have a chill rec-room atmosphere. Nice rooms with very comfortable beds. Prices can be a bit higher than the average budget hotel, but not outrageous. It was one of the few relatively affordable options when we stayed in Brooklyn a number of years ago. Anyway... I won't go on because I'm not their brand ambassador. There's no crime in wanting to stay at a fun hotel from time to time, it's not about "feeling cool" (whatever that means). Not everyone wants to stay at the Holiday Inn Express with noisy families and cranky business travellers.

I think he was talking about the parking issues related to holding curling tournaments at Granite. The club needs parking for out of towners, etc.

The idea to work with GWL is a good one but questionable whether they would be willing

The Beer Can only runs May-September, the rest of the year (i.e., during peak curling time), that lot on the east side is a parking lot for the club.
