As per retail talk and share on Facebook :
The owners of discount department store Hart has acquired Stokes. closures will be less than 20 total. This is the second recent purchase by hard as they also bought flailing Bentley & Co July of this year.

Halifax Retales is reporting that the owners of the discount Hart Department Store chain has just purchased Stokes (and apparently Bentley as well). Store closings nationwide will now be limited to less than 20, with the survivors no longer confined to only Ontario and Quebec. Maybe this means that the Champlain Place location will be safe after all. Workers at the Champlain Place store have been insistent that their store is a high performing location. Fingers crossed!

Feel free to post anytime. SSP Moncton is not my private fiefdom. It is a community effort!

Country Lane at Champlain Place is closing down again. They’ve posted about it today on their Facebook page.

The former Body Shop location at Champlain Place has been cleared out.

This is the likely location for Oscar Wylee, the high end Australian optical store that is apparently coming to the mall.

I think Westcliffe should be coming up with a contingency plan for the Toy R Us space at the mall, given their current mationwide store closures (10), empty store shelves, and their recent dealings with an American venture capitalist. The vultures are circling..........

Yes, I'd agree Toys R Us is hardly a stable and secure tenant.

Rumour is that Loblaws want's to see two No Frills stores in the metro area.

No Frills is a franchise, so, this is contingent on finding a viable franchisee or two.

I wonder where they would go? A perfect location in Riverview would be in the former Kent store, or, potentially as part of the Riverview Mall redevelopment.

I am a little less certain where such a store would open in Moncton or Dieppe. One possibility could be on Granite Drive. A grocery store has been floated as a possible tenant in the past. Competing with Costco however would require a mighty effort.

The old costco was right next to Atlantic Superstore and that worked for years. Walmart as well just down the road. I think it's a great addition to the granite drive.

Lots of people shop at multiple stores for groceries and Costco often doesn't offer everything on a weekly list. Having stores in close proximity can create a kind of synergy for both.

If not on Granite I am floating the idea maybe on Mountain Road in the area of Gorge road or even close to home Hardware. A stand-alone grocery store would do well for the area.

Breaking News:

Some seriously bad retail news for greater Moncton.

Retail Insider has just posted this:

Quote:
“Comark Holdings Inc., the Vancouver-based parent company of Bootlegger Clothing Inc., Cleo Fashions Inc., and Ricki’s Fashions Inc., has filed for creditor protection under the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA). The move signals turbulence in the Canadian retail landscape, as the company announces plans to shutter its Cleo and Ricki’s brands entirely and downsize Bootlegger in an effort to find a buyer.

The company, which operates 221 stores across eight Canadian provinces, employs more than 2,000 people, including retail and head office staff. Comark’s decision to wind down operations for Cleo and Ricki’s comes after years of financial strain, exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, a ransomware attack, and intensifying competition from ultra low-cost fashion retailers”.
This news has ramifications both for Champlain Place and for Wheeler Park where there is a Ricky's/Cleo combo store.

Ricky's, Cleo and Bootlegger are all present at Champlain Place. At least some Bootlegger locations will be saved, but, there is no guarantee that this will include Champlain Place.

And, all this on top of the apparent shakiness of Toys R Us.

This could be a very tough retail year..........

Granite Centre continues to underperform:

Sign in one of the vacant CRUs announcing the arrival of a barbershop.

No offence to the hard working barbers out there, but, I kinda though the Granite Centre was destined for greater things than barber shops, nail salons and vape stores. They should be doing much, much better.......

I’m honestly not surprised. Costco is a great anchor, but there was never plans for large format stores. That means it’s destined to be a strip mall. The Moncton market is already quite saturated with retail, and this location is pretty out of the way for most people in the city. When the developer thought this could be Monctons Dartmouth Crossing it honestly thought they were delusional. The size difference alone is vast.

Granite centre, from its inception, was destined to be a B grade retail area, with an A+ anchor justifying its existence. The city of Moncton made a mistake letting this development happen. Costco should have been forced to stay within the confines of the existing retail areas.

As a north ender who doesn't have a Costco membership, the granite center is effectively out of sight out of mind for me.

Just my anecdotal experience, I wouldn't be surprised if others felt similar.

As a Costco member, I can honestly say that if it weren't for Costco, I would never visit Granite Drive.

Unless they plan on putting in a few mid sized big box stores, the whole development will continue to languish.

Walmart or Giant Tiger would be a good addition to the area. I thought maybe they wanted it to be more upscale complex but vape shops and barbers I'm guessing they could make room for one of those two.
