But the next 7 days we're safe from freezing. We may make it halfway through December without a single frost

Did you know that during World War II, a German U-boat crew managed (during a seaborne raid) to install an automatic weather station in Labrador? The station was installed at Cape Chidley on October 22, 1943, but only operated for two weeks. But this operation was the only known armed German military operation on land in North America (excluding the Greenland)

Yep. Once overheard a Parks Canada employee at Cape Spear excitedly tell a group of visibly uncomfortable German tourists about all the Nazi torpedo attacks against St. John's, Bell Island, the ferries to Canada/U.S., and the weather station in Labrador.

These are low areas against the Lakeshore bounded by a ridge on the north. Thanks for the info! I knew about the microclimate around Point Pelee but after this I had to Google Earth the area around Blenheim area.

Not a whole lot to see in this area, it's completely agricultural.


I should have stopped to take a better pic, these guys were harvesting broccoli just down the road from me this afternoon.



Fall is warm and sunny here, all this cilantro and dill grew after I pulled my tomatoes a few weeks ago. That's why every inch of space is farmland.

Warmest low was Kindakun Rocks, BC at 5.8C

World War 2 was on Canada's doorstep. One of the PEI ferries was torpedoed returning from refit in Halifax. Naval corvettes and merchant ships were sunk in the Gulf of St. Lawrence off the north coast of PEI. My parents lived in Borden, PEI during the war, and they had nightly blackouts. They took it deadly seriously.

Yes that's true, but I didn't know that Nazi German submarines had also managed to bomb the coasts of Newfoundland.

Newfoundland and its seas were a strategic area because "were part of an important Atlantic convoy route that allowed supplies to flow from the United States to its allies in Europe."

They sank a ferry, the Caribou in 1942. Your country was their ally at the time too, but we are all friends now.
