The ebay seller of the cyanotypes you've posted has these two street scenes ones listed as well as the "theatre" ones.

Their listings also say "possibly Los Angeles" ... but they're not.

Those scenes are of Walnut Street in Des Moines, Iowa circa 1899.

The top one has a building festooned in Stars and Stripes like the interior of the theatre is.





I think there's a reasonable chance all those cyanotypes are from Des Moines around the Fourth of July 1899.

For those of you that enjoy watching old movies to see things “the way they used to be” like I do, I submit 1987's The Hidden to you.

It's chock-full of scenes shot in and around MacArthur Park, the Capitol Records building, Los Feliz, Melrose Ave, Hollywood, Little Tokyo... just a lot of great shots of late '80s Los Angeles.

I graduated High School in 1984, so this movie presents LA just as I knew it in my youth. The Hidden made for a great trip down Memory Lane, and was a pretty good movie, too!

Are you familiar with Miracle Mile, another L.A. based film that came out a year later? It includes many familiar locations around the Wilshire/Fairfax area including Park LaBrea, Johnie's restaurant, the LaBrea Tar Pits and the May Co building.



It's really a cult film but I think it's pretty good too.

Scott Charles, the poster of The Hidden that's on IMDB is very familiar to me, so maybe I've seen it, but nothing else is coming to mind. A friend and I like to pick out a movie once in awhile to watch that's more about L.A. locations than anything else, so I'll recommend this one.

Martin Pal, The Hidden is a good movie when it comes to showcasing late '80s LA locations, I'm pretty sure you and your friend would enjoy it.

Here are a couple of long-gone locations in The Hidden that I found interesting. I'll put them inside of a “spoiler” tag - I know that, for me, half of the enjoyment of watching these old movies is trying to figure out exactly where all of the locations are/were, so I don't want to spoil any of the fun!

The record store in the movie was Bleecker Bob's, at 7663 Melrose.

I was a real “New Wave” musician kid back then, so I spent a ton of time in Melrose's record stores, Aron's and Vinyl Fetish. Bleecker Bob's on Melrose was an offshoot of the famous Bleecker Bob's in Greenwich Village, and a latecomer to Melrose Ave. IIRC, the store on Melrose didn't last very long.

The employees at Bleecker Bob's were extremely rude (were they trying to cop an authentic “surly New York attitude” or something? Who knows) who did everything within their power to make you feel unwelcome. In addition to that, everything was impossibly expensive for the then-denizens of Melrose - you know, like “first edition Sex Pistols single, $1,700.” The store was not a good fit for the neighborhood, to put it lightly, and being staffed by a crew of petulant jerks surely didn't help.

Another location featured in The Hidden is the interior of is George's Cafe (née Nemer's Cafe, opened in 1949). I used to eat there pretty regularly, and I've never seen any photos of the place before, so seeing it on film was a real “blast from the past”.

The building that used to house George's Cafe is now Fred 62. All of the genuine, vintage charm has been replaced by ersatz vintage charm. But all of the drawings of old Hollywood stars that used to be on the walls of George's are still hanging in Fred 62.

I just watched the movie, Bristolian, which I enjoyed... however, I am stumped by one location in the movie!

Where exactly was this sequence shot? I recognize the bright red logo of the New Otani Hotel in the top left of the first shot, but beyond that, I'm lost...

Found it: I Googled “Wallenboyd”, which appears on the building in the background.

In the 1980s, Skid Row was still home to the poorest people in Los Angeles, but it also had a thriving avant garde theater scene.

Actors like Tim Robbins, John Cusack, and Jeremy Piven got their start at the Wallenboyd, an experimental theater space at the corner of Wall and Boyd St., in the heart of Skid Row.

I had figured that scene was shot in the downtown area, off of the beaten path but would not have been able to pinpoint it. Well done.

Who knew? Heh! The article about this says "the road is operated in conjunction with an amusement park," which isn't named, but in the movie footage it doesn't look like there's an amusement park anywhere around that location.

I think you're right. My grandmother had an apartment on Laguna just east of Echo Park Ave. I remember it backed up to a hill--this could have been taken from that location before the apartments were built (I'm guessing in the 1920's from the style). That would put the current offices of the Episcopal Diocese of LA at the bottom of the hill from the photographer's position, and the future site of Sister Aimee's temple on the middle/right behind the trees.

My best guess for that photo based on 3D Google Maps is the hillside at the north end of Echo Park Terrace. Much of the view is obscured due to foliage, but the mountains line up well and the angle looking down on the lake is pretty close.
