Not quite transit but relevant.

Spotted by me on Saturday on Granville - tight clearance to those trolley wires.

I think the expectation now is that we'll start receiving 1 new train per month, and they should start entering service more quickly. They took a lot of time testing with the first train because they wanted to catch any issues before the rest of the trains were finished and delivered.

Here we go folks. If you've wanted one, your chance is now on the horizon.

TransLink seeking ideas for reusing old SkyTrain cars entering retirement

The entire aging fleet of about 150 Mark I cars will be retired over the coming years, before the end of this decade, as TransLink’s new replacement and expanded fleet of 235 new generation Mark V cars arrive.

The first few five-car-long Mark V trains have arrived in Metro Vancouver and have been undergoing extensive testing in preparation for entering service, with these new cars set to fully retire all Mark I cars through 2026.

TransLink has now launched a bidding process seeking interested community organizations, developers, municipal governments, and individuals to submit their creative and innovative proposals to relocate and reuse the Mark I cars.
This proposal intake will close on December 6, 2024, and it will reopen at a later date when more Mark I cars are retired.

The successful proponents will be responsible for covering the full cost of moving the Mark I cars from SkyTrain’s operations and maintenance facility and the repurposing of the cars.

Global reports that private sales are welcome as at least one set has already been sold to the film industry. There is nothing in these conditions that state private individuals are exempt from the process. If you want a MK I in your backyard, now is your time to upstage the guy in Toronto who bought a streetcar.

Unfortunately my financial plans kinda....didn't pan out so I'm sorta short a few dollars to opt-in myself.

Website link is kinda shady IMO. Didn't bother clicking anything.

But just in case someone actually gets through, and wants to plug in my suggestion: I think that the very least that could be done is to include them in the Museum of Vancouver. Even if it is just one car from a set.

I haven't been to the MoV in a long time so I do apologize if this is already done.

ariba.com is the official website where government/public agencies place tenders.

Trnslink is going to be in trouble, like every system in the country, due to the new immigrtion levels.

Students & TFW use the system much more then most & this will result in much lower ridership over the short/medium term.

By the same logic, those students are using subsidized U-Passes, so not a big loss in revenue.

Well private institutions aren't U-Pass eligible.

We'll see what the impact is on TFWs, but the numbers the government is putting out in it's latest reform announcement is that it only expects a reduction of 20,000 TFWs country-wide. Based on this quote:

Quote:
This shift could result in as many as 20,000 fewer positions being approved through the TFW Program when combined with other policies in effect as of September 26, 2024
Even if these numbers are off by a significant margin, it's really not going to have a massive impact on Translink ridership.

Student numbers are also only being reduced by 10 percent, so the combined impact of these measures really shouldn't make a huge difference to ridership.

If anyone is wondering what is happening now that the SRT has closed on the Toronto area here's a roundup.

https://x.com/TTCNewsroom/status/1853881316024217653

-One car is heading to the Toronto Zoo
-Two cars are heading to the Streetcar Museum
-18 cars are being refurbished and repainted before being delivered to the Detroit People Mover, which is currently not running due to track replacement work.

This one doesn't seem like it's meant for citizen input. Rather it is meant for actual bids/proposals from a developer.

I called it shady before and I'll retract it. But I don't think that the link is meant for feedback from citizens.

I said the exact same thing after seeing the ROI but deleted it after I read this from Translink:

Interested community organizations, municipalities, developers, and individuals are encouraged to submit their proposals

Likely meaning that if somebody (or a group of somebodies) wants to buy a SkyTrain and dump it in their backyard, this is the site to do it from.

Presumably there is no site where citizens can comment because TransLink have no interest in random people's ideas of what should happen to the old Mk 1 trains. They just want to dispose of them. If someone thinks it's a good idea that there should be one in the Museum of Vancouver, then they need to make sure the museum bids for one, (if the museum agrees it would be a good idea to have one, and can fund the cost of moving it).

I wonder if it's just some token administration fee to take one of the cars.

Quote:
“No idea, frankly, is too small or too big.”

“We did have one car purchased by a film production company for an upcoming TV series, so stay tuned for that — you’ll see a familiar SkyTrain car in a production at some point down the road,” Diakow said.

He says other ideas could include community displays, playgrounds, and art installations.

“Vehicles like this have even been used in artificial reefs,” he said.

They are a lot of aluminum. I'm assuming if it's for a community project they will subsidize the cost but for a private owner you will be paying for its weight in scrap aluminum.
