I have an almost direct line of sight of this project from work, and it has looked like it's in the same state as it was from over a year ago...a collection of jack posts, concrete pillars and some poured walls, with the heritage building floating beside it all. It is a very odd looking jobsite, and a strange location to want to build a tower at first glance...

For sure, a slow moving project. I can see why someone would want to build there though. With the OAG across the street, renovated Rideau Centre and Ogilvy Square, nicer and quieter McKenzie-King Bridge... Now if only we could build a Kettle Island Bridge to quiet down and road diet the traffic nightmare that is Macdonald-Cartier-King Edward-Rideau-Waller-Nicholas.

Maybe they shouldn't be picking things up so darn close to the heritage building.

Getting close to making an impact on the skyline. This is a much needed infill project. Stoked to see the Registry building get a new lease on life.

This plot of land was absolutely wasted space. Having gone outside the food court doors to stand and have a smoke it was nothing more than a patch of ratty grass with litter around the edges.

I could not agree more. What a great use of wasted space that will help with providing more units to that area. I as well had many smokes in that patch!

Some decent landscaping will go a long way to connect U of O to the Rideau/Market area for pedestrians. You can currently choose one of two hellscapes to bridge that gap.

I agree. It will go a long way to help bridge the urban fabric together. When that parking garage comes down eventually, aside from the Nicholas/Waller intersection this should be a bit more pleasant of a road to walk on. With the building set back on the corner and the entrance to the food court it should be a busy corner without being crowded. Hopefully the conflict with cars isn't as apparent as the garage and hotel.

Between the Registry building, Hostel/SAW/Arts Court, Albion restaurant and the base of 90 George you'll actually have some pretty cool architectural eye candy when viewed from the front of this building.

There is a 3-lane highway on-ramp running through that fabric though. I wouldn't want to live facing that. Hopefully once the new bridge is built they can figure out how to shrink it to 2 lanes with wider sidewalks.

I know. A better vertical connection to Mackenzie King bridge would help. The staircase across the street is kind of ratty. A new wider stair case or connection on same side of the street could be an improvement although I guess you could really question the cost/benefit analysis of such a thing.

Walking out of UofO campus and crossing Waller is mildly unpleasant at the best of times but that staircase next to the Hostel is so close to the intersection. Hard to say if that really "leaves you on the wrong side of the road". It's a pretty short block if you feel like swinging back over into either the food court or lower level of the Mall.

Sucks that once you cross under the bridge the backside of DnD is so hostile. Parking entrance and fences. The DnD grounds used to be unfenced as well.

Nicholas isn't going anywhere but just getting the trucks out of that triangle would go so far. Get rid of the trucks and one day all the busses with be electric and it won't be so bad.

Coming back from another Euro jaunt recently and I think half of the busses in Vilnius are electric and there is another good chunk that are trolley busses with overhead wires. It's so damn quiet in comparison.

I do wish the project included elevators to go down from the Bridge to the west side of the street. Still a massive improvement to the urban environment.

The only way we'll make Nicholas truly urban and pleasant is to build the Kettle Island Bridge. That Bridge would be transformational for Lowertown and Sandy Hill.

I walk by this everyday and I swear half the time at least until it got very cold there would be some suburbanite getting out of their car from parking and commenting how cool it is or taking a photo.
