This is the building that originally housed the Scarborough's

The Montgomery Ward's store at Barton Creek closed in 2001 (as with the rest of the chain) and was replaced about 2 years later by the Nordstrom. They completely tore down the MW store and built the Nordstrom from the ground up.

The only Joske's we had in Austin was at Highland Mall. Dillard's took over that store in the late 80s as well.

As for Foley's, they were all converted to Macy's around 2006, which included the Highland and Lakeline Mall stores in addition to Barton Creek. Foley's was also set to open as one of the anchors at the Domain but instead opened as a Macy's (about a year following the conversion of the other stores).

Actually the maun Dillard’s location at Barton Creek was a Joske’s.

Nostalgic photos for me personally because my parents bought their new house on Elmhurst Drive one block east of I-35 in early 1959.
I remember when the Gondolier was built, and the original plan was to include a small “fleet” of gondolas for rental on Town Lake.
Unfortunately, the shipment of gondolas was involved in a fire while being transported to Austin from Italy, with only one or two surviving.

My two younger sons were born at old Seton in 1971 & 1972.
Their older brother was born at St.David’s in 1968.

Enco was a brand name used by Humble Oil Corporation to sell gasoline, lubricants, and other products in certain parts of the United States from 1960 to 1977. Enco was used in states where Humble Oil was not permitted to use the Esso brand, which was owned by Standard Oil of New Jersey.

I have always loved this video. I also love how both sides fully embraced the stereotypes for the cause - super fun.

John Kelso was spokesman & advocate for the South Austin “Bubba Culture” crowd.

I had left Austin in February, 1985 and didn't visit until some time in 1989. I went down to (then) Town Lake with my Mom and we took a paddle boat from just east of the South First St. bridge and I remember being so proud of my home town, finally growing some legit "skyscrapers" in that southern part of downtown. I'm sure my Mom got sick of my "wow"s and "I can't believe it"s as we passed back and forth for a good hour or so. I wasn't especially pleased with all of the set backs but I was impressed with the overall effect and the way it really stretched out downtown, all the way to the river.

Feels like yesterday...

Not much Bubba Culture left in South Austin. Actually, South Austin today is overall a good deal slicker and more trendy than North Austin.

^ Can you tell me more about the history between South Austin vs. North Austin?

I'm currently living in South and I do agree that it's getting a bit more trendy down here.

From what I heard, South and North residents hardly went to each others spots before
