RE: the frost list, I recall reading once that plants typically only die off when exposed to -3 or -4 for several hours. The cities on the freeze list that don't even reach -1 can hardly be considered a hard freeze. All the plants and flowers are still growing and healthy looking in the Ottawa after our "frost" earlier this week. Southern Ontario, Quebec and the maritimes will likely not have another frost for several weeks as temperatures are forecast to remain above seasonal well into November.

Our Hard Frost hits Monday. seeing -5 for overnight lows.

I like the official ones for the freeze list, but would still love to hear when the downtown ones freeze for the first time. I'll definitely share my backyard station's date when it does lol

I live downtown Ottawa and have noticed a lag from first official frost to when the plants die off downtown by as much as several weeks. Our weather station is at the airport which is in the suburbs. We have a weather station also at the Central Experimental Farm which is closer to downtown. You can see both on Wikipedia. CEF is a bit warmer on average than YOW

Perfect day to go canoeing so did just that, at Silent Lake PP. This area I'd say is even past peak fall colour. Some trees are completely bare. They've had freezing nights the last little while.

In terms of the freeze list it's likely that some cities are more handicapped or advantaged by their airport location than others are but I imagine that attaching a real number to that handicap/advantage would be impossible so, it is what it is. And all is good. Like SHH, I too want to know local freeze details etc. so please post.

Even though I didn't expect a freeze the other night (and our low was 3.1 on Bedford Basin) I did bring in a few plants including this mix of succulents that I didn't want damaged...

I continue to leave the bougainvillea out because I've seen it blow through freezing temps in southern Cali with no harm done. Once overnight temps dip to neg. 2 or 3 I'll be sure to bring it in...

The ones on the deck die around 2 a.m. (coming on before 7 currently, automatically), on the tree around 3 a.m., and the six on the fence last at dawn. I'm pleased with that!

Got up to 16C today under brilliant sunshine.

Low of 3C this morning. Was chillier than I expected.

The warmspot was Timmins, ON at 22.0C

Warmest low was Western Island, ON at 12.2C

It was definitely warm in Timmins today. Very unusual for the second half of October. But it was nice while is lasted which wasn't long with the sun setting so much earlier now.

I am on the opposite side of the harbour from you, and my begonias (which are mostly water and tend to suffer frost damage before anything else) are still looking good.

As far as the freeze list goes, it’s fine. After all it’s only something that some board members do for fun, it’s just that every time I see YHZ and Halifax equated it doesn’t feel like a good representation… but then it’s probably the same for a good percentage of other cities on the list.

Next four days in Ottawa are perfection. Sunny and 19 today, Sunny and 20 tomorrow, Sunny and 23 Monday, Mostly sunny and 22 on Tuesday. Going to a friends cottage to enjoy the weather today

8C and sunny in Moncton at 10 AM, going up to 17C this afternoon.

Just like Ottawa, we are in full blown Indian Summer for at least the next five days - full on sunshine and high temperatures rising even into the low 20s.
