I count at least 6 grade schools within 2 kms of Railside. (25 minute walk). Closest is 700m away. U of W is 1.7 kms away.

This goes back a while but I remember back when Linden Ridge only had SFH's, no multi-unit developments and the first proposal came out to put up a modest, 5-story development along McGillivray. Local NIMBY dude honestly said, I kid you not - "We're a community under siege!"

But where are the teachers parking their SUV’s so they can get to Costco and all go out to the cottage all summer long.

There should be gated communities just for teachers on the tops of really high hills so they can puff themselves up more while looking down on everyone else.

Preachy moment warning:

So many people feel they can run away from society's problems by moving to a "better neighbourhood", or some small rural enclave. Social issues become "someone else's problem". What they forget is that, behind some of those very nice looking closed doors, society's problems exist and thrive.

I wouldn't want to tell anyone that they have to live in a dangerous part of town to "prove" their compassion, or allow lawlessness in their streets. We all have the right to feel secure in our own homes, and enjoy pleasant surroundings. I just hope people can see that not obstructing efforts to help others is a way of helping themselves.

They were expected to announce the winners a while ago, but I believe they already know who they are and are gradually revealing them, much like the TNSE announcement. Alternatively, they might be understaffed and are faced with a large number of submissions, which is causing the delay to be longer than anticipated.

The large empty lot at the corner of Ellice Ave and Simcoe St, which had been for sale for over 10 years, is currently being excavated and surveyed, as though in preparation for a building. Anyone know anything?

I remember when it was some random food store, although that closed down a decade ago at the very least.

They are probably building apartments.

Google street view shows it as a dirt survaced un-fenced empty lot in the fall of 2007

I was thinking of a larger abandoned lot. At Ellice and Victor. It looks like it was a "Discount Everything" store.

Speaking of the "Discount Everything" lot (701 Ellice Ave), has anyone heard any news about that lot recently? I found this thread from 2021 with the user "pmuhar" saying that they had just purchased the property. Pmuhar, if you're still around, do you have an update about a potential development?

only location I can find on the city tracking site for Ellice Ave, is for a lot with no number shown having a permit to have the lot surfaced with gravel. And that was issued about 3 months ago.

I wonder if that is the lot at 701 Ellice?

Yeah that seems to fit the bill, drove by today and they have skimmed the top of the lot off down to the earth, that’s it. Wonder if they’re gonna try for an illegal (?) parking lot.

Seems like they have a permit. It's just downtown with the supposed moratorium on new surface lots.
