Speaking of alcohol, convenience stores in Ontario can sell beer and wine as of yesterday with about 4,200 licenses issued Provincewide. There's a mandate for beer/cider/ready-to-go cocktail stock to be at least 20% small Ontario producers, with 10% of wine. Interestingly there's only about 300 licensees in Toronto, probably because of proximity to existing LCBOs and lack of shelf space. I know only a few of the many convenience stores near me bothered, which I'm ok with since the ones I frequent have good produce and other specialty goods that take up a lot of shelf space.

I'm currently at our place in Napanee where pretty much every convenience store / gas station opted in. Will actually be much more useful here as previously the only options were LCBO, Beer Store and a pretty amazing cafe/bottle shop that unfortunately has limited hours.

Interested to see what craft options get stocked, but outside of some specialty stores I'm not expecting much. The system was rushed in so smaller producers lack access but it will probably be good for bigger ones like Collective Arts and Great Lakes Brewery. So far markups on product are lower than most expected, with something that sells in the LCBO for $3 seeming to go for around $3.75 in convenience stores. Like exist in Quebec I'm expecting some places to focus on higher end product, but it may take time for that to materialize.

Don't get me started on the boondoggle of doing this now vs in a year's time when the Master Framework with large brewers would have been up for renegotiation. But hey, at least we can get more access to booze to forget about it!

Am I the weirdo that will try to only support the LCBO because they give fellow Ontarians a living wage, and Billions per year of money generated by one's alcohol purchases go right back into the public coffers to benefit all Ontarians.
In 2022-2023, a $2.58 BILLION dividend was generated to support healthcare, education, and infrastructure in the province.

Does say, 7-Eleven, a Texas based American retail conglomerate with almost 85,000 locations around the globe really need more money?

Royalmount (Montreal) retail offerings. I predict that nearby Rockland Centre will lose a lot of customers.

The LCBO gets the wholesale money anyway, regardless of where you buy it, and that's where the LCBO makes most of its money. Retail margins are pretty slim (for all the bellyaching about Loblaws prices, for example, only about 4% on average of the money you spend at the till actually ends up being Loblaws profits). The greed in the food & drink industry isn't with the grocers. It's the middlemen, and especially with the huge multinationals that make the stuff. I wish people would spend less time trying to boycott Loblaws and more time trying to boycott PepsiCo (among other examples).

If you want to support our workers here in Ontario and promote living wages with your booze dollars, the most important thing to do is purchase local products. That counts for more than buying it from the LCBO.

That being said, I will mostly shop at the LCBO regardless . Most convenient for where I live.. and when I do drink (which is not often) it's usually homemade mixed drinks so most of my booze purchasing is spirits/liquers which are LCBO-only still.

LA BELLE ET LA BOEUF

Beauty and the Beef - a great name for a restaurant.

The menu is staggering for it's variety of burgers. Has anyone ever tried it???

I'm intrigued.

Yes, it's pretty darn good, though artery-clogging. There is one near my place.

Another good one that is similar and also has a good name is Notre-Boeuf-de-Grâce. No locations in Gatineau though.

You'd have to lump me in there as well. Now, nevermind the fact that I don't drink much at all from liquor stores, I find the government owned shops were a well run, efficient way of distributing alcohol, even if there are some issues with store hours and lack of services in some areas.
A few mom and pop stores near me now sell alcohol in my area, though I'll continue to go to the Beer store or LCBO near me since the (good) price and convenience is already there.

As mentioned the LCBO will remain the purchaser so they will still receive revenue, even with the small discount for wholesale purchase offered to retailers. The Beer Store is the worst option in this regard as it's owned by a conglomerate of large brewers that has/had a monopoly deal for distribution of large-format beer in the Province.

I'll likely still go to the LCBO mostly as when I'm getting booze it's usually a combo of hard liquor, beer and wine and there's one close to us. Though honestly we probably purchase the most directly from craft brewers and wineries, or local bottle shops that carry products you can't get in the LCBO.

Thanks. Moncton is about to get a Baton Rouge (at the Crowne Plaza Hotel across from the Avenir Centre). We already have a Keg. This might end up being the next franchise that I will agitate for on our local SSP forum. If you create enough noise, sometimes you can make things happen, and, well placed people in the city do keep track of what we talk about.

I see that currently they have no franchises outside Quebec, but, their franchising page seems to indicate they are open to opportunities "across North America."

With a large francophone minority population, Moncton often benefits from expansion of Quebec based retail and restaurant chains.

If we had to pay $250 million to kill the Beer Store monopoly, how much did the Beer Store pay use for that monopoly? What were the terms? And what will be the revenue from the individual licenses?

Yes, Ottawa serves that role as well, along with Moncton.

La Belle is owned by Foodtastic which has a whole bunch of food "banners" that it controls.

We're definitely paying a lot more than $250M to kill it prematurely as opposed to waiting a year! I don't think they paid much if anything for the monopoly originally - they basically offered to step in and do distribution of beer for the Province post f prohibition in the 20s. It was a pretty ridiculous deal tbh, and the only real benefit Ontario got as time went on was the reuse/recycling program for empties.

And of course they will continue to benefit as said corporations were heavily involved in figuring out the new framework. I would expect physical Beer Store locations to continue closing as they step back into a distribution role.

Foodtastic has a bunch of different franchises in Moncton. We are getting a Noodle Box at the Lounsbury Centre this fall too.

I think that once you have a few from the same family, the chances increase that you'll get others.

7-11 is Japanese owned, based on the articles I've read about Canada's Couche-tard trying a takeover bid.

It's retail business of a commercial product. It is the most appropriate situation in which to apply the principles of capitalism. Whoever best convinces customers the spend there, with price/selection/service/convenience, gets the money. "Need" is not a factor.

From their stable of brands, we currently have Pita Pit (4), Milestones, Second Cup (2) and Quesada. We are getting a Noodle Box. We used to have Freshii and Copper Branch, but they failed (Monctonians are not vegetarians).

I think la Belle et la Boeuf would be really popular here, especially in the entertainment district around the Avenir Centre where several popular restaurants are (or will) set up shop, including Baton Rouge, Carrabbas and Monck 10.

From that list this isn't really a particularly luxurious mall for all the fanfare its gotten. High brow for Canada maybe but having traveled across Asian megacities and wealthy enclaves in the US this is pretty mid-pack with a sprinkling of a few luxury retailers.
