Love that Edmonton shot. Coldrsx, if you can get more pictures of the downtown area and from Strathern Park Lookout looking west/northwest, that would be awesome! I've always loved that angle because it highlights the river valley forest right under the main CBD area.

Four skyscrapers u/c adding to the area around the Bloor-Yorkville skyline. From left to right: 8 Wellesley, 11 YV, The One and Charles at Church (on the far right).

I like this shot from vincemtl on Agora Montreal. The building coming up is 900 Saint-Jacques (63 floors) and there's a nice view of Mont Saint-Grégoire in the distance. Just beyond are the Green Mountains in the Eastern Townships and Vermont.

63 floors. That record may never be beaten in Montreal on account of the height restrictions...unless some other satellite downtown (away from the mountain) builds higher.

I like the Halifax skyline, but it is sort of table-toppy.

It's a very respectable skyline. I like it. Plenty of years ahead to watch it improve as well.

So much potential. I fully expect it to be much more akin to a Kelowna than a Victoria in 2040.

I do love our downtown skyline but can't disagree that it's 'table-toppy'. Height restrictions are to blame. I guess it's fairly well known that our downtown height limits are tied to the Halifax Citadel. Currently there is a three tower project underway and a two tower project soon to start within the downtown. All five towers will be in the 20 - 22 floor range I believe. The Cogswell lands, which lie to the right-side of these previous pics, may have more generous allowable height. Maybe height concentrated on one side will create a lopsided and less attractive skyline? More distance and different angles provide a different overall look to a skyline and it remains to be seen whether the current 'best' angle remains so in view of tower projects underway or planned in areas other than downtown.

Here we see the Macdonald Bridge with downtown Halifax on the right hand side and Dartmouth on the left hand side. There are projects with I believe 7 towers currently underway with the tallest being 33 or 40 stories.

In this pic we have downtown Halifax on the left and the north end of the peninsula on the right. The tallest tower in this pic is 34 floors and is in the north end where there are plans for many more towers and up to 40 floors, perhaps more with density bonus.

Our tallest building is in this shot. From my north Dartmouth vantage point it looks rather short. The building sits on the north west arm. It's partly obscured in this shot by the left side of the right most tower of the MacKay Bridge.

Just off of and to the north west of the peninsula Seton Ridge has recently started construction. It'll be a year or so of road and other infrastructure build before we see any building start. Multiple 20 story buildings are planned. The site is the green bare area in the centre-ish of the pic.

And further north west along the basin...a 20 or so story building is under construction.

20240904_111123 by AJ Forsythe, on Flickr

Still further along the basin is the Larry Uteck area. From my perspective I see the crest of the hill down to the basin where a fast ferry/bus station in planned for the future following construction the Mill Cove fast ferry/bus station further along the basin. Larry Uteck is building fast and furious towards the west but I can't see it from here due to down slope beyond the crest of the hill.

Bedford West is growing too with towers popping up there beyond the end of the basin.

You can squeeze in more floors than that.

Halifax's skyline doesn't photograph that tall. Perhaps it's the larger footprints of the towers.

The Citadel is even more of a lost cause than Mount Royal. At this point, the drama of the hill is gone and all you are preserving is the mediocrity of the skyline.

Mount Royal would have been spectacular were Montreal built like Stockholm or Barcelona, but that means like an eight-storey limit. Not 60.

I am not sure if the Citadel would even assert itself over the roofs of normal European houses or their theoretical colonial equivalents. Given this, the best would probably have been to make a wide avenue out of Carmichael and George streets with the clock and the fort as the terminating vista. The avenue could have been as broad as the Grand Parade.

I agree. You can't see the Citadel from behind the skyline anyway, so limiting building heights in an area constrained for space seems pointless.

The planning rules around the Citadel have the feel of things that came from a committee without much vision. The height limits are meant to ensure that you can't see modern buildings from certain points inside the courtyard (plus there are specific view planes cutting into that volume). They are not really about the skyline, and they were promoted partly by anti-development groups because they created height limits over large areas. I notice that the idea of the city itself or modern buildings being appealing to look at didn't really occur to people; they only wanted views of certain historic landmarks and natural features like the harbour.

I think the empty space around the Citadel in some cases detracts a bit from it. There are some nice views of the ramparts. Agricola, Dresden Row, or George Street. Duke Street would be good too but unfortunately is ruined by a pedway. George Street will look better with Press Block and could be really nice with some kind of redo of the lower part.

The George Street pedestrian path up to the clock is quite mediocre too. There were plans to improve it going back to 1900 or so but they were never built.

The Maritime Centre is something like 560,000 square feet. Queen's Marque is 450,000 square feet and Nova Centre is around 1 million for the complex (office, hotel, convention centre). It is more like Ottawa than Victoria and can never be like Kelowna (downtown, in overall aspect ratio; it is much more built up than Kelowna) due to height restrictions.

40 storeys are allowed in Halifax, but not downtown. It already feels like one of those cities where the tallest buildings are scattered around, and the best views are panoramic views of the harbour from vantage points like the ferries. Pictures don't really do it justice. Same for the scenery around the Bedford Basin and so on. Not that it's NYC or Rio, but the downtown tabletop effect isn't that big of a deal in person.
