There's definitely work being done. It's not just all bridge work for the project. The Old-yale fly over between the bridge and Tannery has steady progress day over day (I drive by 3 days a week) and plenty of people working every time I go by there. Not sure on the bridge itself, but at least for the connecting pieces there is progress.

I agree though this thing needs to be 6 lanes from the start. The NDP seem to have no problem pushing municipal governments on things like housing targets and stuff, I can't see why they are scared to tell New West to suck it up with respect to opening as 6 lanes instead of 4. It's not like New West likes them anyway right now and in an election year, could be something to get a few people on their side.

As is, that short merge has the potential to be a choke point.

I thought it was odd that there isn't a lot of steel on the west side of the girders in that photo for the on-ramp from Columbia.

Not sure how it will tie in to the rest of the structure but the north most beam looks like it has room for one more girder.

Since July 15, 2024 the eastbound section of BC Highway 17 was shifted over to the new freeflow overpass at Old Yale Road.

Why were foam blocks used for the overpass? Instead of an elevated viaduct similar to the 72 Ave exit on HWY 91

The image above was posted by Klazu in this forum on May 26, 2024. It looks like the first set of cables are installed. And now they are just starting the second set of cables? At that speed they may have the deck finished in 2-3 years.

What's the rush? It's going to be the same number of lanes as current Pattullo bridge.

Well for one the new bridge will have much wider lanes, no longer requiring tractor-trailers to take two lanes when crossing.

Also an actual useable multiuse pathway. I'm a cyclist and have never crossed the bridge on my bike in its current configuration, but will after the new bridge is built.

And the new bridge will also have a free flowing connection to westbound hwy 17.

For what it's worth, while the number of lanes may not be changing, the design of those lanes can make a big difference. Wider lanes, a solid divider, and an isolated pedestrian space are huge improvements. I've spent many years driving the Lions Gate Bridge both before and after the deck replacement; that project, while retaining the three-lane design, made a huge difference in traffic flow and pedestrian safety.
