Plop ! That was the drop in the bucket. Great to see this underway, now all that is needed is 1000 more units. The area between there and St. James Church to the west could become a little village.

Not exactly sure what a national urban park is, but Steven Guilbeault and Danny Breen will make an announcement to advance the creation of a national urban park in St. John’s on July 8th.

Another intriguing proposal for the Atlantic Place Parking Garage. Sure to get the "NIMBY's" riled up. Proposal is on page 138 of the latest St. John's Agenda page.

Wow, that is a hideous rendering. You would think proposals in 2024 wouldn't be designed to look like something from the late 70's.

Building design could definitely use a bit of work, but that's a great use of space, provides much needed housing, and increases urban density.

I had the pleasure of visiting St. John's for the first time a couple of weeks ago. The city was very charming and had a very relaxed chill vibe. I found the harbour area a little disappointing. I guess it makes sense as it is more industry than anything else but it would be nice to have some waterfront element not that different than Halifax or Saint John. If that isn't a possibility then this parking garage is a total mess so I'm glad there are plans to freshen it up and maybe even add to it with an adjoining hotel. The design proposed isn't wonderful, but it's a step in the right direction. Taller buildings in St. John's are far from being architectural gems, so it might seem odd if this would be the exception. I think to start, get something that is visually aesthetically more pleasing than what already exists (for newer builds in St. John's) and work from there.

Would any local forumers know if City Hall will be getting any makeover?.. This was probably the most disappointing building in the entire city. Looked like it was falling apart at the seams.

OMG that IS hideous, and I'm pretty open to just about anything to fix that monstrosity up. Whatever that screening is actually makes it look worse!
The higher portion is just Meh.

Wonder what happened to the original proposal that stirred up so much fuss?

I agree that the concept is good but the actual design is less than desirable. Even a different colour would make a big difference.

I saw the Atlantic Place article in VOCM this morning actually don't mind it. I can remember when Atlantic Place was a thriving retail space. It'll never return to that but nice to see a possible reinvention.

Inside or Outside? I go pass City Hall daily, and can't say I've noticed it falling apart. The concrete is a bit weathered and could use painting.

I seem to recall talk of sprucing it up a few years, but I don't think anything actually happened.

I find it a bit bland, but I don't mind the design overall. I'm doubtful it will get built, the NIMBYs are likely already mobilizing to complain about how it impacts their view of Southside oil tanks and fueling wharf.

Both the concept of that area as a neighbourhood and the description on the site are bizarre. Touts walkability, but the collection of houses along Southside Road are nearly a kilometer away from the nearest businesses around the intersection of Leslie and Water Street. For that matter, the two side of the harbour aren't even really connected - 488 Water Street and 253 Southside Road are 1.8 kilometers apart both by car and on foot. It also warns of a "considerable amount of hills", which I suppose if you're leaving the area you'll hit some hills, but the area itself has to be the flattest part of the entire downtown.

All their listings have 'Neighbourhoods' listed. Some of them are sensible like Rabbittown or Southlands, but others are non-sense like Buckmaster's Circle (which includes Casey and Springdale Streets). Locals would call the area either the West End, or maybe Downtown depending on the street; the Circle is just the housing development.

Although Stockyards is a cool name.

I grew up on Southside Road just a little west of the subject area. I would call that area the Dockyard rather than Stockyards and the area a little to tge west woujd be the Railyard. There was a narrow steel pedestrian bridge crossing tge river jyst a little east of Patrick Street which may possibkg still be there. Might be the green line crossing the river.

Used to be a busy area with ths trains,dockyard, fish plants traffic,welding shop, offshore stirage abd ABC Cabs.

Dockyard makes more sense. I'm not sure where Stockyard can came from, since a stock yard is a holding place for livestock. I figured it was another name for a rail yard, a Rolling STOCK yard, but that doesn't appear to be the case.

Google shows Craft N Mart listed at the former Princess Auto on Stavanger drive. Anyone know if it's actually opening there?
