What an era, filled with glamour and scandal, and as Lillian Roth's headstone reminds us, "As bad as it was it was good."
There was account of Ms. Nesbit teaching art for some period at Grant Beach Art Academy on Figueroa on property on second lot north of Temple-- Paining/drawing, sculpture, ceramics and textiles were all produced here. Some living quarters were available to some staff. Sort of a collective.

Extras

Here are some more slides that i transferred for work. Some were labeled as "Old Los Angeles" or LA. Not sure if these have been posted before (some might not even be LA).

These were colorized so im sure they have been posted somewhere before.

The two views above have been posted, but i think this was taken by someone from our office. The next 3 are the mysteries for me, any help would be great. Along with the 2 above, these were developed together (sa,e date codes on the slides) and seem like they we're part of a slide show to show how Scouting can work in any community.

Circa 1952 slides from GLACC

The Brownstone Apartments were at 1168 Bellevue, I think the houses in the foreground may be under the 101?

Those houses just dodged the 101. On the present day map they would be located in the red section by the freeway.

The photograph was likely taken from the arrowed embankment?

Google Maps

Some of the buildings indicated on a 1945 aerial.

Some of them I think survived to the early 1980s.

Earlier today I happened upon this original snapshot of a Punch & Judy Ice Cream store.

eBay

Does anyone know what the Moron's Ecstasy is referencing?..(besides my uncle)

And here's what is written on the back.

We have spoken about the Punch & Judy Ice Cream Stores but this photograph is definitely new to NLA.

Just for laughs.

I found this in the National City Star-News, Volume LXIV, Number 37, 30 May 1947:

Moron's Ecstasy Not Explosive

What will people thing [sic] of next? In a recent magazine article a new colossal sundae which is called Moron's Ecstasy, was pictured and described.

It should be almost as powerful as the atomic bomb. The only difference is, that after one eats it (you do eat it), you won’t explode or will you? There isn't any uranium, but among other things in the concoction are eight flavors of ice cream, three different syrups and lots of other things make up this tantalizing feast. The whole dish stands about a foot high.

Some of our more courageous students are going to try it as soon as we rest up from June sixth. We wish these morons the best of luck and a happy recovery by September first.

This is fun.

A bevy of Paramount stars in 1987.

I thought it might be fun to try and figure out who is who.

If push comes to shove go here but then it wouldn't be any fun.

Here's my best shot, E_R:

Names in RED I feel pretty confident about.
Names in YELLOW, I'm not 100% sure.
BLUE FACES, I recognize, but can't remember their names.
GREEN FACES... I have no idea.

I think Jennifer Beals is mislabeled as Irene Cara in the front row right side.

That first one with the bicycles is by the esteemed C.C. Pierce. Here is the caption from USC Special Collections.

Photograph of the Los Angeles Police Bicycle Squad in the Mounted Police Parade on Broadway north of fifth, May 24, 1904. The officers are seen from behind in the extreme foreground trailing into the distance. Signs on the buildings along the roadside read "Broadway Meat Market", "Pacific Fish and Oyster", "Delicatessen" and "M. Codie". Trollycar tracks are apparent in the road, which does not appear to be paved.

In the Paramount photo, I believe that's Cliff Robertson between Kevin Costner and Don Ameche

Looking at that photo with the gasometers, it's hard to believe they were ever a thing.
Have we ever heard or read of any issue with them? Could they withstand earthquakes?
Were they guarded?
