Of course, Franco-Africa exists. And to answer your question, there's be one medallist from Quebec; an Anglo-Montrealer. Obviously not a real Quebecker in your eyes.

Quebec does exist. It’s a Canadian province.

Couldn’t help but think of Acajack when reading this :Haha:

(Would be on topic for the “defund the CBC!” thread as well!)

You know what makes things worse? For every Olympic opening ceremony the host country provides an advance backgrounder on the content pf the show to the dozens of broadcast teams from all over the world. It doesn't give away all the punches of course, but it does provide info on the program and the country's history and culture. Because José Broadcaster from Ecuador or Nguyen Broadcaster from Vietnam probably doesn't have French or Russian history knowledge at the tip of his fingers.

In the case of Paris 2024, needless to say the Radio-Canada team even had an advantage over most countries' teams, because French history and culture are already quite familiar to them.

Did they even read the material?

At least it didn't give off the superficial blonde Emily in Paris vibe that was English CBC's commentary. Max cringe.

I really enjoyed the opening ceremony and also how so many small details were thought of for these games. The location of the venue are amazing. I have noticed how the camera angles outdoors were thought of ahead so that the backdrops would be beautiful and significant.

I started watching everything only in French today since it's in France. The interviews with French residents and Paris Olympic officials are great.

Acajack was talking about how French is spoken on Radio-Canada. Well there is a way English is spoken on CBC. The announcers and anchors often say "Canadian" with much more emphasis on the second "a." Especially the female ones. They say "can-EH-dian" with "EH" being much louder than the rest of the word. I'll have to find a clip as an example.

How else would one say it? The emphasis IS on the second syllable. The only "CBC English" I've noticed is the shift from "Qwuh-bec" to "Qyuh-bec".

Ouais, it's like Afro-Canadian Ben Johnson who was supposed to smash everything in Seoul in 1988 when I was a kid.
Except there were tracks of dope down to his bones. The guy cheated so badly that he eventually lost it all to Carl Lewis. Lol.

I can remember that. His name turned a disgrace to athletics.

I'll stick to that until further notice.
The medal count makes no difference whatsoever.

So what percentage of Québécois in general in the total Canadian summer medal count? No one has answered yet. I'm curious how they would fare if they were an independent nation.

Anyway, crazy night here. French swimmer Léon Marchand has won more gold medals than the entire nation of Germany. Pity you can't watch French TV, the journalists were ecstatic. There are really no other moments that can generate so much emotion (except the football/soccer world cup of course).

Not sure how relevant that is. Having been in Estonia when they won a gold medal nobody was thinking oh we would have won a lot more medals collectively in the Soviet Union. That one Anthem in that whole olympics was worth a hundred medals under another flag.

No idea, although my impression is that they are well represented. I do know that Quebeckers punch above their weight (tee hee!) at the Winter Olympics.

Generally speaking I think Québec produces just under 20% of Canada's medals at the summer games typically but 30% or more of the medals at the winter games.

There can be some variance from one Olympics to another though of course.

I'm saying that many of the CBC commentators and anchors will put a lot more emphasis on the second syllable than the average English-speaking Canadian does.

As is every other province, community and culture in Canada. It's all still part of Canada.

So like it or not, Quebecois are Canadian. Personally, I like it. Quebec is a great province and the people are wonderful. I'm proud to call them Canadian.
