Are they actually starting this? Or is it going to just be a vacant lot for the next few years

Well they sat on the building permit since 2019 so I assume they are going ahead.

900 W Georgia Rezoning (Hotel Vancouver Addition) Withdrawn

Quote:
In a fresh blow to Downtown Vancouver, plans to add over 260,000 sq. ft. of retail, office, hotel service space, & a pool to the Hotel Vancouver have been withdrawn. This is despite supportive reviews by the Urban Design Panel & Heritage Commission last summer.

Yeah I won't be too mad that they're revising it!

I'd like any expansion/reno to include a much better pool facility - maybe even a rooftop pool and bar. We need more of these in Vancouver!

Dunno why they would want to block the light to so many rooms on the south side of the original building. Any addition taller than the lowest tier of the original building (10 storeys) will diminish the original architecture.

This is the most massing i'd be ok with:

It 🞵🞵🞵🞵🞵 to lose investment downtown, but yeah, I was never a fan of this proposal. It didn't respect the hotel whatsoever.

They were also selling $3 take-away rice packs at the side window. Although raising it to $5 over time, still a bargain for a downtown location. Window used to open till 3am and was great when I was cramming for exams. The current restaurant honours the previous legacy by naming it "Cold Tea".

That was when this area was a lot nicer and safer, with Wings across the street still in operation, and the Howard & Johnson hotel not turned into a DTES-style slum by the BC government.

I am not looking forward to tourists walking out to see all the filth around when the hotel is completed and opened. The City needs to maintain or enforce a much higher standard to bring back some normalcy to the area.

I'm not in favor of blocking development for views but I feel like Hotel Vancouver should get an exception from the Robson Plaza.

Just build the expansion the same as the original. Like actually, not in a cheap way!

That's because the south side is clad in brick, not limestone, and the rooms are recessed into what would become a light well.
It should try to stay below the windows of the Panorama Roof event space/restaurant.

Not too sad to see this one withdrawn.

The brick makes it pretty clear where the original architecture intended abutting buildings to be built to, so if and when something comes back here there seems to be a pretty good template for what to do. Essentially like Dleung's diagram except I don't necessarily agree on the need for the drop in the middle of the massing.

These seem to cross over at different points (I think the last three disappear if they adopt the new view cones?

3.2.1 /3.2.2 QE Park

9.2.1 Cambie Street

B2 Charleson Seawall

C2.1 Laurel Landbridge

F1.1 Choklit Park

I wonder how long until Quadreal does something with the 777 Hornby site.

301 E Hastings Salvation Army Temple

Quote:
B.C. expands Downtown Eastside community building plans

By Cole Schisler and Hana Mae Nassar
Posted July 5, 2024 3:19 pm.

ousing Minister Ravi Kahlon says the redevelopment of 301 East Hastings Street was initially planned in 2018. At the time, the plan called for 75 units of affordable housing on one lot.

Now, however, he says the project is much bigger.

“We are now assembling four parcels next to 301 to build a main floor of health-care services for people within the community, as well as close to 200 units of housing in the community,” he explained Friday.

One of the additional pieces of land was donated by the 625 Powell Street Foundation, the province notes.

The minister says the province, BC Housing, and Vancouver Coastal Health — which owns 301 East Hastings — will work with the City of Vancouver for an application to redevelop the site this coming fall.
https://vancouver.citynews.ca/2024/07/05/downtown-eastside-community-housing-plan/

It's been several years since the redevelopment of the Salvation Army Temple was last floated, but it's now back on the agenda.
