Yeah, Leiper and Gower have been saying the same thing. Councillors do their best to try and make some changes to the proposal based on community feedback, but they can only do so much before time runs out. The Stittsville mid-rises surrounding seas of asphalt parking lots are case in point.

Well I'm glad to see/hear this. The NYMBYs need to be reminded of the reality once in a while. They better find a better complaint than "my tomato plant wont grow" to stop a project bringing much needed housing options

Tbf, the tomato person wasn't against the project (Brigil towers at the old bus depot). They just wanted guarantees Brigil would keep their promises on green space and affordable housing.

The people today were straight up NIMBY.

There has to be a balance. You don't want the city to cave to NIMBYs, but you also don't want the city have their hands tied so badly that the developers can build any cheap 🞵🞵🞵🞵 they want. Case in point is 360 Bobolink Ridge. Everyone on this forum is complaining about how it is surrounded a sea of asphalt parking, but the city has absolutely no power to insist on increased density (something Glen Gower was pushing for on that file).

To be really picky on this, my understanding is that no planning consultant would take on the file. The City only seems to have a couple of go to consultants locally who would take on these files and the City often has to go to out of town consultants on these files and invariably they lose.

You are correct that she said lawyer but I believe it should have been a 'professional planner'.

Yay! Looking forward to this one. I generally prefer the designs and more human-scale of the mid-rises built in this city versus the high-rises. This one will be a great TOD addition to the area, complimenting the other mid-rises going up on Gladstone/Rochester.

Mary Huang was her name and yes she is very much a nimby. As head of the centretown community association she signed a letter asking for 256 Catherine St project to be rejected....

So yeah, just straight up nimbyism from the core of our city and exactly why these community associations should be ignored.

Has an Ottawa community association ever supported a development over 4 floors in height in the history of this city? Has an Ottawa community association ever had constructive and well thought out reasons to protest a development? Has an Ottawa community association ever had a member under the age of 55? I can't think of any examples.

I remember during the Major Building/Moxy tower consultation they actually chimed in and supported the height and really liked the design, which was surprising. One of their concerns was ensuring it was built as rendered (outside of zibi does this ever happen in Ottawa? lol). They definitely weren't under 55 tho

Perhaps construction will move forward with a new owner, but I’m surprised the listing doesn’t illustrate this impressive building, which was approved.

Seems like a terrible waste of council’s time if they don’t intend to build.

If you read the listing its a Power of Sale. So this isn't an attempt at a flip for profit, but probably a forced sale from the bank.

Walked by here last night, it is depressing indeed!
Hopefully with the discounted price, they can make a quick sale and someone can start with the build soon.

As you said, the area will be a hot spot in upcoming years with Rochester Heights adding a lot of density, plus just up the road is the new Library and Dream buildings.
