LEGO is opening its second Michigan store at Woodland Mall...
Coming to Woodland Mall: Official LEGO Store
Quote:
A new spot for Lego lovers is coming to the Grand Rapids area.

An official Lego Store is opening at the Woodland Mall this summer, it announced in a Monday Facebook post.

“Calling all Grand Rapids LEGO fans! The newest LEGO Store is opening this summer at the Woodland Mall,” the post says. “Stay tuned for an opening date and more details soon!” It will be the second Lego Store in Michigan, according to the toy brand’s website, with the other one located in Troy near Detroit.

West Michigan has some unofficial Lego stores, including a Bricks and Minifigs location just a few minutes away from the mall.

As an AFOL (Adult Fan of Lego) I am excited by this news. There has been some concern expressed by others that Lego is moving into town just to squash their competition (in the form of Bricks & Minifigs - a third-party chain Lego retailer located just a mile down the road). I frequent their Kalamazoo location and they are great. Personally, I think there's plenty of room for both. Bricks & Minifigs serves a slightly different market, with options like bulk bins, buy / sell / trade, and rare used / retired items, in addition to selling current, new sets. I guess it's true that their new set inventory sales might take a hit, but I think both stores will thrive. I'm a bit jealous that a Lego store was not announced for The Crossroads Mall in Kalamazoo, but I guess the market just might not be large enough.

Muskegon -

I was in Muskegon yesterday and managed to snap a few photos around downtown.

Adelaide Pointe (I couldn't get closer without drawing suspicion from construction crews) -

Muskegon Art Museum Addition -

Delta Hotel (painting of the brick was actively in progress right before I took these pictures) -

The Leonard (signage is up for the ground-floor restaurant - Puerta Vallarta, but it is a ways away from opening) -

Lake View Lofts (no sign of anything for Phase 2 yet - still just an empty lot) -

BENTON HARBOR, MI – The company that owns the closed Palisades Nuclear Power Plant will host an open house for the public to learn about efforts to restart the electricity generation station. The nuclear plant in Covert Township is the focus of state and federal efforts to repower the facility and return its 800-megawatt capacity to the power grid as a significant climate action...

...Holtec International will host the open house from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 4, at the Palisades Joint Informational Center, 330 W. Main St., Benton Harbor...

Plan for 546 housing units at former Muskegon furniture plant moves forward
Kate Carlson | Crain's Grand Rapids Business

A plan to redevelop the former Shaw Walker Furniture Co. building near Muskegon Lake into 546 housing units, a parking garage and retail space has received initial approval from the city’s planning commission...
(rest of the article is paywalled)

This property is probably the largest-remaining visible remnant of Muskegon's heavily-industrial past. It's conversion could be very transformative for the city.

I'm liking these recent progress shots of the massive Gun Lake Casino Phase 5 expansion. The tallest building between Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo (by a good margin) continues to impress -

Microsoft buys 316 acres in Michigan for potential data center
Quote:
Microsoft Corp. has purchased 316 acres in southern Kent County from Steelcase Inc. for $45.3 million for a potential data center development, Crain’s Grand Rapids Business has learned.

The irregularly shaped vacant property is located south of Grand Rapids in Gaines Charter Township, at the northwestern corner of the Patterson Avenue and 76th Street intersection. Microsoft has not yet announced plans for the site, but The Right Place Inc. helped the company assess the property for a potential data center, said Randy Thelen, president and CEO of the economic development organization.

“The Right Place is pleased to have helped Microsoft Corporation assess a 315-acre industrial parcel in Gaines Charter Township for a potential data center. The opportunity ahead with Microsoft fits into our 10-year tech strategy to develop the greater Grand Rapids region into a leading tech hub in the Midwest,” Thelen said in a statement to Crain’s Grand Rapids Business. “With one of the leading tech companies in the world taking notice, we’re well on our way there.” Microsoft officials have yet to meet with Gaines Township leaders and have not shared any potential development plans, said Dan Wells, community development director of the township’s planning and zoning department. The township is in the process of reviewing a non-disclosure agreement with Microsoft related to the property acquisition, Wells said.

“We don’t have any general concept plan yet,” Wells said. “(The land) has been controlled by Steelcase for many years and it seemed like two years ago they showed more interest in doing something with it.”

Great to see this finally coming to fruition! It seems like they've been talking about this for a really long time.

Yes, seemingly for decades - at least since the early 2000's I think. I guess the Muskegon market finally got hot enough to push this one into reality!

Sticking with Muskegon, (this news is over a month old now, but) the historic Hackley Administration Building - built in the 1890's - will be repurposed as a 45-room boutique hotel, named Hackley Castle Inn and Suites -

Muskegon landmark to become boutique hotel
The Lakeshore
September 16, 2024

A downtown Muskegon landmark will be turned into a destination that will give people one more reason to stay in the Lakeshore community. The historic Hackley Administration Building will undergo a transformation into a one-of-a-kind 45-room boutique hotel, aptly named the Hackley Castle Inn and Suites. The Hackley Castle will blend the building’s storied past and historic architecture with contemporary luxury, offering a unique stay in the heart of downtown Muskegon...
The $11.5 million project is scheduled to wrap up in fall 2025 -

Report: Ford Airport eyes on-site hotel
Quote:
Gerald R. Ford International Airport is working to bring an on-site hotel, Crain’s Grand Rapids Business reports.

According to Crain’s, a project to move the airport’s air traffic tower would need to be completed before the hotel can be built, as the hotel would block the line of site from the tower’s current location.

It would be the airport’s first on-site hotel. News 8 reached out to the Ford Airport Tuesday afternoon and did not immediately hear back. The fast-growing airport is in the middle of a major $600 million expansion project. As part of the project, crews have expanded Concourse A, adding eight new gates and give restaurants.

The airport is building a consolidated car rental facility and a terminal enhancement project, which will relocate ticket counters, and a new parking garage is set to be built.

Ford Airport is also working to add a federal inspection station, which will make way for international direct flights, as the airport will be able to process international passengers and bags.

Demolition of parking ramp to make way for massive development in Gaslight Village
Quote:
A parking ramp in East Grand Rapids is going to be demolished soon, making way for a massive redevelopment that will transform Gaslight Village over the coming years.

The two-level parking ramp at 2255 Wealthy St. SE, which is privately-owned, is set to be torn down in December, East Grand Rapids City Manager Shea Charles said. A date for demolition hasn’t been set yet, but the city issued permits for the demolition on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

White Pigeon -

Preface to say I know this forum wasn't crafted with developments like this in mind. But, it isn't every day / decade that a project like this comes along for a village of ~ 1,700 in West Michigan. I've had this one on the backburner to share, for the slow time of year, and I think it is worth sharing, due to the relative scale -

A new 6-building / 48-unit apartment complex is under construction in the Village of White Pigeon (home of the oldest surviving U.S. Land office in the state). Dubbed "Native Flats" (interesting choice?), it is being developed by WITT Properties (Craig Wittenberg, based in Centerville, MI), on a 5.72-acre lot at the edge of town (corner of N Elkhart St. and W Vermont Ave). The development was approved 4-2 by the St. Joseph County Commission in August. All 48 units will be single-story, with 2-bedrooms, and they will be priced at $120% of the median local income and below. The goal is to have occupancy in spring of this year.

I couldn't find any renderings, but the two photos below were taken just a weeks apart, in late October and early November. They show how quickly it is progressing, perhaps largely due to the pole-barn type construction methodology, where larger wood posts are used for the exterior structure instead of typical wood studs. The posts are set in the ground prior to pouring the floor slabs, reducing the amount of time it takes to get the roofs constructed and the units enclosed -

West Michigan might not be on the radar much nationally but arguably it's one of the foremost up and coming regions in the country, at the least it's the foremost up and coming under the radar region. The GR metro is stepping up from mid-sized status into that of a small "large sized" city giving West MI something its been lacking which is a flagship city that can compete on the national stage. Kalamazoo has made nothing short of a remarkable turnaround while Muskegon's revival keeps picking up steam I'm very excited to see where the city is in 5 years.

West Michigan has always had tremendous potential as one of the most attractive coastal areas in the country. The small size of its main cities as well having to break out of post industrial stagnation or pull off a full on recovery has held the region back from being more than just a vacation hub. There's still a ways to go but the shape of a potential future is taking shape and it looks promising. I'll be excited to what happens if the national and international HSR connections are filled out from Detroit if the planned northern and west MI connections to GR and TC come to fruition. That would be a game changer for Michigan's West Coast.
