Quite frankly, I'd like to see another school in Nova Scotia open up a medical school. Dalhousie politics is becoming a drain on the province. My uncle studied engineering at St.F.X. yet my friends I grew up with could only do up to 2nd year and then be forced to move to Halifax to finish their degrees at Dal. X also has (debatably) the best nursing school in the whole region, to the point where lots of prospective nursing students will move from Ontario or out west to study there. It really helps St. Martha's hospital recruiting new staff and having students present for their practicum but at this point I'd rather St.F.X. have an on-campus hospital next to the old 104 beltway for better access to the public and better facilities for the nursing program and perhaps a med school to boot.

X has a surprisingly large endowment for a smaller university and lots of politically and financially connected people are alumni, yet I could see Dalhousie blocking anything threatening their control.

The issue about Med schools is the anticipated drain of Provincial resources over the perceived career of a Nova Scotia trained and then stay at home Doctor. Bureaucrats in the eighties reduced the seats at Dal as they started incorporating the population exodus out of N.S.

For purely political reasons the Province is setting up a Med school satellite in C.B. to hopefully develop a C.B. Indigenous centered Program that generates a steady stream of Doctors for the sickest part of the Province. C.B Regional BTW was the most Dangerous Hospital in Canada. For three years in a row. St Martha's is how far away?

Why not push capital funds into constructing 2 smaller hospital facilities in the suburbs for mainly general hospital care, and upgrade more specialist related stuff towards the QE2? Why not build a hospital in the Sackville/Fall River/Waverly area and another in Hammonds Plains/Hubley/Timberlea area just off the 103?

Doesn’t the Cobequid Centre in Sackville fit that description? Then there’s the Dartmouth General, and the new outpatient centre in Bayers Lake.

It's easy to loose perspective on how truly massive this will be until you consider how dwarfed the already existing HI building will be. Interesting that the new rendering doesn't include a new parking garage adjacent to the commons (and yet includes the demo of the current Robie St. parkade).

The VGH felt ancient, even when I was a med student, intern and resident there from 1979-1989. I can only imagine what it is like now.

I suspect these are early renderings, but I'd go with a different finish for the Robie Street facing section. It seems like an homage to the Centennial building. I think we should be distancing ourselves from those memories.

Yes I agree that the rendering is hopefully not the actual facade. I was looking at the camp Hill veterans Memorial building from the corner of Robie/Jubilee and there's something there I think that could stuck with. It's a lot of brick but it has these walls of square glass. Imagine the opposite ratio of the new buildings mostly that square glass accented with nova Scotia made brick (keep it local)

I agree... the stairs feature is interesting, but now it seems like that corner is a wide open space.

I don't get why they're still not building up on top of the newer emergency wing, which according to my father who's worked at the QEII since '95, was designed to accomodate future upward expansion. Also why the big surface lot on the other side, they should be expanding there as well. Build for the capacity required 20 years from now, not the capacity you need today.

They should have gone with the prior 2 tower design, I agree - could have been halfway built by now.

NS government buildings are at best just functional and have not been architecturally notable since the 1960s. Cheapest low-bid materials and design do not deliver much.

This may be all that we see at this location. The province recently bought land adjacent to the Dartmouth General to build a hospital of similar size to the new infirmary. Cobequid is set to be expanded and more land was purchased next to the new outpatient hospital in bayers lake

Sensible decisions, peninsula Halifax is not the centre of the health universe and not as accessible to the majority of HRm residents and those in abutting areas.
