That white one is pretty cool. Nice to see something that has character. Too bad it’s not taller.

Agree with you officedweller: the curved facade wall becomes a stupid element when punched through like in that rendering. I would prefer its removal if that is the solution. Needing windows for the space overrules any need to retain a feature. A good solution would be to re-create the curve as a glass element integrated with the fenetrated facade behind. A bonus then would be the stupid thing #2: the round entry cover. I know there is a smaller existing version of this. It too is not needed at the expense of interrupting the other parts. There is all too much going on in this proposal. Edit. Edit. Edit.

Oh no, I totally disagree. It would add some life to the area after business hours

so glad to hear this...it was a highly insensitive response to one of Vancouver's only architecturally significant office buildings

Dang, that's a loss. The only chance we had in having a new taller tower in that area of town.

No new office towers are going to be built on that small footprint these days.

Hotel is desperately needed though, as is rental.

Whatever anyone feels about the design - and zoning issues aside (which are a justified concern) - losing that much amount of housing that close to a Transit station with the current affordability and housing conditions shouldn't be anything to celebrate.

It's hard to see how an empty lot (or parking structure) sitting where there could have been housing, or alternatively a new office building sitting with lots of unleased spaces with the current office market (if you can even get one built on that footprint) - are situations that anyone can legitimately argue are good or great for everyone.

But I'm sure there are those who will anyway.

Well it makes sense they would pause with the current market. They probably have enough projects in the pipeline.

I'm just surprised they don't go with a pure hotel. Perfect location for business and cruise travel.

That's what I was thinking that they had so much in the go, and with this site generating good revenue and a secure site, that a hotel in the future isn't needed to get going ASAP.

If it's true that a hotel use might be part of their revised 1166 West Pender project (where they've already demolished the previous office building), then having another here would seem to be be a lower priority. There are also more rental towers proposed in the West End than when this rental use was proposed (with zero policy to support it).

Seems like Henriquez Partners is connected with the redevelopment at 388 Abbott now?

aka 95 West Hastings - the Holborn site that they rezoned eight years ago and then submitted a DP for. Maybe they're planning something bigger? Or could they have sold the site?

It's interesting that they are coming back for a rezoning so something major must have changed. Maybe not connected but Gair Williamson the architect on the project suddenly passed away in September 2023.

It quite probably is connected, as he had a small practice which I imagine might not continue. He designed an unbuilt rental building for the adjacent lot too.

After so many inept municipal governments running this city for decades, ABC is finally doing work on the rejuvenation of Gastown in 2024, starting with repavement of the heavily damaged road.
