This is the nature of team sports, showboat and the other team will come after you in one way or another.
The leafs have every right to respond to Greig's actions. In fact, knowing Greig's style, he was probably inviting it. But a scrum or a fight would have sufficed, what Rielly did was totally out of line and he'll have to suffer the consequences, as will the leafs, losing their best defenseman for multiple games while barely hanging onto a playoff spot. If the Leafs miss the playoffs, they will look back on the 6 points they gave up to the Sens as well as the games they lost Rielly for because he couldn't keep his composure.

I guess it shouldn't be too surprising considering their salaries are paid by the same folks who own the Leafs, hence "Leafsnet." Maybe the most laughable part of their segment is when Ron Maclean tried to defend Rielly's integrity by showing a clip of his teammate yelling "Morgan!" when calling for a pass. Maclean goes, "See? They call him by first name!". That was the entire clip... I wish I was joking.

Luckily, apart from Leafs fans, Leafsnet, and old-timer roid-ragers with small peepee syndrome, people seem to be condemning Rielly pretty universally. And with good reason - one action involves shooting a puck at a net really hard and another involves a blindside crosscheck to the face on an unsuspecting player. No room for that garbage in hockey. And the best part is, Leafs fans are saying "Bet Greig learned his lesson, he won't do that again"... well I can almost guarantee Greig would do it again without hesitation, given his style as an agitator (which he's clearly effective at).
It's a fan base that grew up with Don Cherry as their authority figure. Their reactions to this event are thus exactly what one might expect.

GARRIOCH: Senators' VP Chris Phillips says club is studying upgrades to Canadian Tire Centre

Author of the article:Bruce Garrioch
Published Feb 16, 2024 • Last updated 4 hours ago • 4 minute read

The Canadian Tire Centre still has a lot of life left in it.

There’s been a lot of talk about a downtown arena since the Ottawa Senators won preferred bidder status from the National Capital Commission for an events centre at LeBreton Flats in June, 2022 but even if a lease is done in September they won’t leave Kanata immediately.

The way the Senators are looking at the situation they’ll be at the CTC for the next four-to-five years and with the season ticket campaign already under way owner Michael Andlauer has been making investments in the building to make upgrades.

Senators’ president Cyril Leeder, chief executive officer Erin Crowe, VP of business development Chris Phillips have been studying ways with the club’s front office staff to make changes that will help with the fan experience.

Talks with the NCC continue every two weeks with an eye towards getting a lease in place in the fall. That’s still the target date and both sides remain optimistic it will get across the finish line.

“This building is 28-years-old, our fan base is supporting us and we have to do our best to support them to give them the best experience possible,” Phillips, who suited up for a franchise record 1,179 games with Ottawa in his NHL career, told Postmedia in an interview Thursday.

“That requires some upgrades, some changes and it also gives us the opportunity to test some things and see what our market thinks of some potential things that we would consider for a new arena.”

As a result, the Senators have been having a lot of internal discussions about ways they can make the arena a better place. In the last couple of months, they’ve improved the rink just by installing LED lighting and last summer they put in a new message board above the 100-level.

They’ve been throwing out ideas for changes they’ll make in the off-season and Phillips noted that these are some they are looking at. That doesn’t mean they’ll all happen right away, but they are getting consideration:
  • The Senators are looking at changing some of the seats in the building because they’re the original ones that were in the building when it opened in Jan., 1996. “We’re looking at upgrading some of those,” Phillips said.
  • The club installed a grab-and-go drink market on the 200-level to start this season and the Senators are likely to do a similar style for fans in the 100-level. It’s a popular option because there’s usually no lineups and fans can get through it fairly quickly. “It’s been very well received,” Phillips said.
  • He also noted they’re also studying a grab-and-go option with hot food on the 200 level.
  • Club CIBC, which was rebranded after the Senators signed a sponsorship agreement with the bank in the fall, will also get a new look in the summer. Phillips said they want to make it feel like more people are welcome there by trying to integrate as part of the concourse on the 100 level. “It’s inclusive for all and we want try to open that up a little bit,” he added. “We want to make that more of an enjoyable experience.”
  • The Senators may bring back an ice level bar behind the club’s home goal at the 100 level. They used to a post-game show and called it the Lexus Lounge. It may not happen next season, but Phillips noted the organization is trying to determine a way to better use that space because of its proximity to the rink.
  • The club will likely expand the Brookstreet Lounge section to include more seating. It’s located right behind the penalty box and there’s a dinner at Lower Gate 2 before the game. “We’re looking to add to the fan experience, add some seats and there’s already great food offerings,” Phillips said.

The club needs to do these things because there’s no telling how long they’ll be here and a move won’t happen before the 2020-30 campaign so the Senators can’t just ignore the building in the meantime.

“The mission of everything we do is for people to come in and have a great experience,” Phillips said. “If somebody comes to one game, we want them to come to a second game. We want our season ticket holders to get the value and see that we are re-investing back in the building and the team.

“No matter what level of fan you are or how you often you come to a game we want you to have a great experience. One step at time, we’re just trying to build on that.”

It’s not like the Canadian Tire Centre is falling apart, but some of the changes the club makes will be done with an eye towards using that concept to a new a building.

“The team here behind the scenes had done an amazing job of keeping this building up with improvements, like Club Bell. Things have happened over the years to keep it new and fresh. You see some new seats in some of the areas already,” Phillip said. “There’s slowly been a lot of things happening over the years that we want to continue.”

Senators keeping their options open on a downtown arena

Bruce Garrioch, Ottawa Citizen
Published Feb 17, 2024 • Last updated 1 hour ago • 4 minute read

There’s still a lot of moving parts as the Ottawa Senators study a move to a downtown arena.

While the Senators are planning upgrades to the Canadian Tire Centre because they don’t expect to leave Kanata before the 2029-30 National Hockey League campaign, the club is keeping its options for a site for a new rink open.

Talks between Capital Sports Development Inc., the Senators’ parent company in the project, and the National Capital Commission to build an events centre at LeBreton Flats continue on a bi-weekly basis after a memorandum of understanding (MOU) was extended to September 2024.

The NCC wanted to grant the request by owner Michael Andlauer, who completed his purchase of the franchise on Sept. 21, 2023, to have more time to study the MOU signed in June 2022, when the Senators were given preferred-bidder status to get a lease agreement.

Since Andlauer signed on the dotted line, talks between the NCC and the Senators have gained steam and both sides remain confident they’ll come to come to an agreement, but the club is also studying alternatives sites that have been mentioned by Mayor Mark Sutcliffe.

It’s a file that’s at the forefront for Senators president Cyril Leeder, chief operating officer Erin Crowe, vice-president of business development Chris Phillips and the development committee that Andlauer formed within his ownership group when he held his first board meeting.

The committee includes Senators alternate governors George Armoyan and Paul Paletta along with Shawn Malhotra of Ottawa-based Claridge Homes. All three bring experience in real estate and business development, so they’ll help Andlauer set the course for the arena’s new home along with the club’s senior leaders.

Phillips told Postmedia in an interview Thursday this was a file the organization was spending a lot of time on because the Senators were motivated to get a new rink project across the finish line.

“Internal discussions, meeting with the NCC, speaking to the important stakeholders that are going to have an important role in a new building,” Phillips said. “It’s progressing and that’s a positive that’s the case.

“Everybody would love to see everything go faster and see it signed on the dotted line and get going. But the fact that there’s progress and everybody involved wants to see it happen, which is a huge piece of not having opposition to it, it’s just doing what’s right for everybody involved.”

The Senators remain focused on trying to get a deal done at LeBreton, but Phillips played a key role in the sale of the franchise and he had a chance to visit with the seven groups that visited the city during the due-diligence stage, and most felt the site at LeBreton isn’t big enough.

The original bid called for a rink and hotel on seven acres located about 10 minutes west of Parliament Hill. Tobi Nussbaum, CEO of the NCC, has indicated there is room for flexibility on the size of the site and it’s believed that’s part of the negotiations between the two sides.

Sutcliffe has said that, if the Senators want to go to LeBreton, then he has nothing against the idea. But city staff have spoken with team officials about the possibility of other options downtown that may work for the Senators and help revitalize the city’s core.

Phillips noted the Senators needed to keep every possibility on the table in case they couldn’t get a deal in place at LeBreton, which was why the ideas from the city had given the organization pause for thought.

“We’d be foolish not to (think about downtown) just because a deal at LeBreton isn’t done,” Phillips said. “We’re still pushing forward on that, but, if that wasn’t to happen for whatever reason, then you need options. That’s a benefit just to be able to get to the finish line wherever that is.

“The ultimate goal, as Michael Andlauer has talked about many times, is we’re doing it for the fans. The goal is to do the best we can to find the best location with a state-of-the-art building. We have to look at all the factors and all the areas so that it makes most sense for our fans that are coming.”

The Senators are doing their homework on this front. Andlauer, club management and ownership partners toured Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle in January. They’ve also been to UBS Arena in Long Island, Rogers Place Arena in Edmonton and the Little Caesars rink in Detroit.

It’s interesting to listen to Phillips speak about this file because he’s deeply invested, he’s up to speed on the project and he wants what is best for a city. He suited up for 1,179 games with the Senators, but it’s neat that he’s immersed himself in this next phase of his career.

“Since I came back into this position, we were already the preferred bidder on ‘LeBreton 2.0’ and I was brought right into it,” Phillips said. “We all heard (Daniel Alfredsson’s) comment that he wanted a meaningful role, and I kind of feel the same way on the business side.

“To be involved in everything going on, I love it. Everything is new and exciting for me. I’m learning something new every day. Having Cyril Leeder and Erin Crowe to learn from has been invaluable.”

If the LeBreton parcel as proposed today isn't big enough as Phillips says, I don't see how any site downtown will work. LeBreton is the only site close enough to the core that gives the Sens the ability to add more than an arena. Not sure I understand how Sutcliffe is selling the core without somehow offering multiple blocks, which he can't do (as far as I know).

That last article sounds like LeBreton is the Sens number one choice, ad the whole "keeping their options open" is really only in case LeBreton falls through.

I agree bartlebooth, if the Sens want enough land for development to help fund the arena, LeBreton (or Bayview Yards) are the only options. Not only would any Downtown Downtown option offer far less land, but it also adds the exorbitant cost of demolition and, if a second block is added, moving utilities around a future arena.

LeBreton is a blank slate with plenty of land to stretch out and build a proper housing, office and entertainment district. Any utilities, archeological digs and decontamination will likely be done by the NCC before the land is transferred (be it leased or sold).

Hasn't a lot of the decontamination been done already? I seem to remember them bringing tons and tons of dirt away for almost a decade. Was that just for the eastern parts of Lebreton?

Getting real sick and tired of this back and forth. Just goddamn commit to it and get started. Sutcliffe is such a tool for how he's trying to derail things.

Any podcast listeners, tune in this week to "Owned, with Rex Chapman" as they discuss Eugene Melnyk. They have Athletic writer Ian Mendes and comedian John Dore as quests and discuss Melnyk's reign as owner of the Sens. The first couple minutes, they talk about his ownership of St Mike's and the hilarious pronunciation of Mississauga (Mississswaga). I doubt there is anything new to Ottawa listeners, but I enjoyed the conversation.

Sutcliffe has this idea of 'revitalizing the downtown core' stuck in his head without realizing that the tiny little rectangle of shabby stumpy old office buildings downtown will only be one small area of the actual core of the city in 10, 20, 50, 100 years. The height restrictions in Downtown and the Byward Market guarantee that those neighbourhoods will lose status as the defacto 'Downtown' of the city before long. Lebreton/Tunneys/Little Italy will inevitably become the centre of gravity when this metro hits 2+ million people. Typical short-sighted politician.

We really need to stop using downtown to talk about the CBD... CBDs in most places are kinda lame, what's important is what's around it.

Totally agree, especially post-covid. Sutcliffe seems more concerned with the fate of the lunch spots the feds used to frequent than transforming this city into more than the bureaucratic beehive of the place formerly known as 'downtown'.

The downtown core will never be super vibrant - not with it being largely office buildings with limited ground-level retail. That's fine - we have the potential to make Centretown, Byward, Lebreton, and other districts more vibrant...

Yeah, Sutcliffe claims that "we need to take our time, get it right, think decades ahead", but if that's the case, that we need to get it right for tomorrow, not today, then yeah, LeBreton makes more sense.

"We need to get it right" is Ottawa speak for we are going to talk about it for a decade or so and be no further ahead.

Which happens first. Parliament is back in Centre Block, PM moves into a new permanent residence, Sens move to new arena in Ottawa?

This is a very serious question

Can we throw in:

* Budgeted and approved plan for new bridge/tunnel across the Ottawa River

* New Developments breaking ground on Tunney's Pasture

*A vibrant new mixed use community at the Booth Street Complex

*Richcraft 'The Sky'

*CLV/InterRent '900 Albert'

*'NEXT' on Merivale

*Somerset House redevelopment

*Our Lady's School on Murray Street redevelopment

Maybe we should have a poll to decide which we think will happen first, as a community
