I understand both sides of the coin on this one.

It can be a little disappointing that new buildings in Ottawa don't come close to being as eye catching as in say, Montreal, Toronto or Calgary.

At the same time, I'm 100% in agreement with "bring them on anyways".
We desperately need the density. We need a thriving core that can sustain large amounts of people living, and we need a lot more housing to be built to achieve this. Some will look more drab than others, due to cost, designers, or a variety of other reasons. We still need them, and so I say even to the ugliest ones, bring them on (and I'll try not to look up at those ones when passing by)

this is not terrible. It's consistent at least for Ottawa. I'm still waiting for that one earth shattering design.. something a little outside the box. I think as the nation's capital it deserves something grand near the CBD... maybe something that punches just even a little taller than the tabletop with a more iconic silhouette. I can dream.

The windows (that took around about ten years to install) make that building on Carling. High quality, nice tint, black mullions. This one has some Wish.com windows..

That's true. Massive windows with a nice color tone. The cladding to window here isn't the same. Pretty sterile looking.

I'm working at the corner of Baseline and Maitland right now. Kitty corner from the steel frame Dymon storage building. My god are the balconies massive. It's a condo but looks like a rental from the outside. I haven't pulled a tape but I want to say the balconies are pushing 5' out from the building envelope itself.

1976 build. Large 2 bedroom unit pushing 1k sq. ft. It might not be pretty on the outside but it sure is functional. Condo fees are also only?? $750 a month. It's very well cared for.

This building seems regressive in comparison.

I measured that balcony...

It's 5 ft on the nose from the inside of the railing to the face of the brick. 11 ft wide inside of the railing.

Why are all these new builds balconies so tiny? How many meters of concrete extra are we talking about? You already need to form and pour the damn slab. You already need to supply and install railings.

I'll go on a limb and say part of the reason is the lot line to lot line builds but that isn't really the case on this one.

We live in an Idiocracy folks.

i echo the sentiment that this looking a bit... disappointing... so far

still, gotta say i think it's a huge net positive for the area, as long as the interior build quality is good it would be a good buy... anyone who lives here has food and booze within walking distance and fairly decent transit options (12/15 on montreal + 14/18 on north river) if you're heading towards centretown. and in the event of bus route unreliability it's walkable to rideau in 20 mins.

I don't think we're far enough along to judge yet. The balcony rails will make a huge impact. If they're Ali-baba or just grey Greco sh*t rails, then yes, it'll suck.

If they're actual fritted glass, slab-edge covering panels, then we might get lucky here.

I'm on the fence if they are those stamped sheet metal flimsy things that Claridge likes these days. I'm not sure if that'll be good or bad.

The balcony pattern is the same, and the grey precast can be seen in the renderings.

What about the giant mural in the renderings? Out of scope?

I'd even say the Dream towers also jump in on this too. Renaissance and those will impact the CBD pretty well I think.
