22x Bow River Bridge Update

The new four lane EB bridge is nearing completion - looks to me like it might open in the next month or two. Then work shifts to the existing WB bridge (currently used by both EB and WB traffic) - the huge new I-beams were installed a couple of weeks ago so that it can be widened to four lanes.

Another year of traffic mayhem!

After construction both bridges will have the capacity to accommodate 5 lanes of traffic in the future if required.

The next section of Stoney Trail, from 16 Avenue to Bow Trail is now open! Has anybody travelled on it since opening a couple of days ago?

I drove it northbound the other day. The speed is reduced to 80 km/h due to construction. There were more lanes on the road than I thought there would be and the views coming down the hill aren't as dramatic as I thought they would be. I would also love to see a bunch of trees planted along the sides of the hill going down to 16th Ave to try and recreate what was there before as just leaving it as a grass seems like a miss and a bit sterile. That being said, its primary function is obviously a road and it will be a huge improvement to people living in west and south-west Calgary.

Meanwhile on Google map, I see construction on the south side of 22X beyond the SE corner of Stoney Trail. Is 22X being twinned?

Is there already quite a bit of traffic on it?

AT doesn't plant trees in the TUC. Not only are they expensive to plant and maintain they encourage wildlife which results in more collisions. Sterile = Safe, especially on a high speed road with 50,000 - 90,000 cars per day.

The only exception to this was a stretch of Nose Hill Drive WB between 87 St. NW and Stoney Trail. (https://www.google.com/maps/@51.10595,-1...6thumbfov%3D100!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu) The Scenic Acres community was somehow able to convince the Department to plant trees there to block noise/headlights from the ramp from shining into a handful of houses. They did absolutely nothing to that effect and majority of them are dead now.

I agree the views going NB towards the TCH are less epic than what I was expecting also. However, the view going SB towards Hwy 8 are probably the nicest of the Mountains & Elbow Valley area anywhere within the city limits.

Yes the way it opens up to the valley and the mountains can be quite the sight

Has there been any talk in Calgary to upgrade Anderson Road to a freeway from Stoney Trail to Deerfoot? It's already a divided 80 km/h road and looks like there's room for interchanges and RIROs.

Probably not a priority with Glenmore to the north and Stoney to the south providing that already. Would think any money available would be put towards finishing Glenmore to full free flowing between Barlow and Stoney

Drove this section on Friday. Intersection is being upgraded at 104 St SE. It was hard to tell exactly what the plan is, but at a minimum they have added improved turning and merging lanes. No twinning at this time.

This the work I commented on in the Alberta Highway Construction thread:
They are currently doing some work on 22X just east of the ring road to access a new community called Hotchkiss and it certainly isn’t being done to freeway standard.
No twinning involved and certainly not being done to the Province’s long-term plan to twin 22X east of Calgary. They’ll be ripping this current work out and starting over when the time comes.

Isn’t that what this city/province do as per normal anyways: do minimal/cheap/half ass work that needs to be ripped up in a year or two anyways? Why not do it right the first time?

^One example off the top of my head is the Bow River Bridge on 201 between McKenzie/Cranston and Sundance/Chapparrall

You could probably add the Crowchild trail upgrades between Memorial and 24th as well.

Minimal fixes just for them to rip it all down in a few years.

What’s wrong with this fix? The cost to repair and increase the size of the existing bridge made replacement make sense. The age of the old bridge made replacement make sense.

Since the ultimate fixes would cost well over a billion I think we’re decades away from anything but minor changes to that stretch

Welcome to the ring, Calgary! 10 months ahead of schedule, if only every project was like this...
